1) Define the term ‘electric dipole moment’. Is it a scalar or a vector? Deduce an expression for
the electric field at a point on the equatorial plane of an electric dipole of length ‘2a’.
2) State Gauss’s theorem in electrostatics. Apply this theorem to derive an expression for
electric field intensity at a point near an infinitely long straight charged wire.
3) Explain phenomenon of self-induction. Derive an expression for the self-inductance of a
current carrying solenoid.
4) Distinguish between the magnetic properties of Dia-Para and Ferromagnetic substances in
terms of:
i) Magnetic Susceptibility
ii) Magnetic permeability

Give one example of each of these material

5) The short wavelength limit for the Lyman series of the hydrogen spectrum is 913.4 A0
.Calculate the short wavelength limit for the Balmer series of the hydrogen spectrum.
6) The ground state energy of hydrogen atom is -13.6eV. What are the kinetic and potential
energies of electron in this state?
7) A biconvex lens made of a transparent material of refractive index 1.25 is immersed in water
of refractive index 1.33. Will the lens behave as a converging or a diverging lens? Justify your
answer.

Five Marks Questions:


1) Explain the following:
a. State Faraday’s laws of electromagnetic induction. Write down its mathematical
expression
b. State Lenz’s law related two electromagnetic induction.
c. Two loops of different shapes are moved in a region of uniform magnetic field in the
direction marked by arrows as shown in the figure. What is the direction of induced
current in each loop?

2) A square metal wire loop of side 10cm and resistances 1Ω is moved with constant velocity ‘v0
’ in a uniform magnetic field of induction B=2Wb/m2, as shown in figure. The magnetic field
lines are perpendicular to the plane of loop and directed into the paper. The loop is connected
to the network of resistances, each of value 3Ω. The resistance of the lead wires is negligible.
The speed of the loop so as to have a steady current of 1mA in the loop is
3) Draw the graph showing intensity distribution of fringes with phase angle due to diffraction
through a single slit. What is the width of the central maximum in comparison to that of a
secondary maximum?

pattern.

Case Study:
Read the following paragraph and answer the question
A number of optical devices and instruments have been designed and developed such as
periscope, binoculars, microscopes and telescopes utilizing the reflecting and refracting
properties of mirrors, lenses and prisms. Most of them are in common use. Our knowledge
about the formation of images by the mirrors and lenses is the basic requirement for
understanding the working of these devices.
(i) Why the image formed at infinity is often considered most suitable for viewing. Explain

(ii) In modern microscopes multicomponent lenses are used for both the objective and the
eyepiece. Why?
(iii) Write two points of difference between a compound microscope and an astronomical
telescope
(iv)What are advantages reflecting type telescope over refracting type telescope.
OR
Write two distinct advantages of a reflecting type telescope.
