Time Alloted: 3 hrs. Max.Marks: 80

* General Instructions:-
1. The question paper is divided into four sections.
2. All questions are compulsory.

SECTION A- READING (20 MARKS)

I. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.

(i) Kanchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world and only 265 metres lower than the Everest. It is
located on the Sikkim-Nepal border and, like Mt Everest, is part of the Himalayas. However, to get the most
amazing and most beautiful views of Kanchenjunga, mountain climbers are advised to visit Darjeeling. For those
who plan to climb Mount Kanchenjunga, the town is also a good place to get mountain climbing equipment,
emergency kit, food and medicine before they set out on the extreme adventure,

(ii) To mountain climbers, Kanchenjunga is more difficult and more dangerous to climb than Mt Everest, the
highest mountain in the world. To climb Kanchenjunga, they need more mountain climbing skills and physical
strength than climbing Mt Everest. The slopes are steeper and there are more dangerous snowstorms and
avalanches than on Mt Everest. Besides, the paths up to the summit are less known to climbers than those of the
Everest. One in every four climbers has died while climbing this 8586 metres high mountain. This makes it the
most dangerous mountain to climb. The first attempt to climb the mountain was made by a Swiss expedition in
1905, but they were pushed back by an avalanche which killed one climber and three porters. After that first
expedition, several other expedition teams risked their lives trying to reach the summit; many of them were killed
in an avalanche or died after falling off a cliff. Some of them simply disappeared in snowstorms. For 50 years,
climbers challenged its dangerous slopes and were faced with dangerous snowstorms, strong winds and
avalanches. No one was successful in getting to the peak.

(iii) After two failed summit attempts, a British expedition successfully reached the summit in 1955. The night
before they achieved their goal; the team faced many difficulties. Heavy snowfalls and strong winds hit and
destroyed their tents. As if things were not bad enough, the next morning, a small avalanche hit their base camp.
Some of their equipment and
emergency kit like sunglasses, ropes, cameras, headlamps and medicine disappeared in the avalanche
Furthermore, some of them either got sick or lost their physical strength. A few of them thought they could not
put up with the extreme nightmares anymore and wanted to give up the expedition, However, they kept on
climbing until they reached the summit around 3:00 pm. They stood 6 metres away from the highest point of
Kanchenjunga as they promised the local people not to disturb their god. Most successful
expeditions followed this tradition by stopping a few feet away from the actual summit.

(i) Nestled in the pristine hills of Meghalaya lies the cleanest village of Asia. Mawlynnong is the name of this
tiny village, located in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, 90 km from Shillong. It is popular all over the world
as 'God's Own Garden'. No wonder, because the people living in Mawlynnong believe that 'cleanliness is next
to godliness'. It has won the acclaim of being the Cleanest Village in Asia in 2003,

(ii) Cleanliness, as we all know, gifts good health. Dirty homes and unhealthy surroundings. where garbage is
strewn all over, become the breeding grounds of disease-causing bacteria, mosquitoes and different types of
germs. Cleanliness is not just the government's or the municipal corporation's responsibility. The people of
Mawlynnong realised this fact and the community has made joint efforts to maintain a clean village. By 2007,
the village had even eradicated the practice of open defaecation, with toilets built for each household under the
Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan.

(iii) The onus to keep the village clean lies with every person living in the village
Every person is involved in cleaning roads picking up leaves and throwing garbage in beautiful bamboo
garbage bins
Bamboo garbage bins create a pretty picture in every nook and corner of the village Cleanliness is an age old
tradition and a way of life for all villagers. Children as young
as four learn to keep their surroundings clean at school.

(iv) The question arises that cleanliness as a habit is so hard to impress upon our family members, then how do
the people living in Mawlynnong get a community to become the role model of cleanliness and sanitation. The
spirit of cleanliness of this tiny Indian
village is commendable and truly inspiring.

(v) In the village's three schools, the next generation is already learning and being groomed to keep up the
tradition of cleanliness and good health. Not only this, children who play on Mawlynnong's spick and span streets
are involved in cleaning them along with the dedicated town gardeners. Boys and girls as young as eleven years
old begin their day around 6:30 am. All these village kids are involved in the cleaning and beautification of the
village. Early in the morning before going to school, the children storm the streets to sweep up dead leaves and
garbage with brooms that they make themselves. The children are also responsible for emptying the bamboo
rubbish bins, which are surprisingly hand- woven, cone-shaped baskets that are found all over the village.

(vi) In Mawlynnong, waste management also deserves applause. Organic waste is separated from burnable trash.
Leaves and other biodegradable waste is buried in pits and used as fertiliser. Oh! Mawlynnong also knows the
organic ways towards healthy living. The non-biodegradable waste is destroyed far away from the village. The
town gardeners are dedicated to the cause of combining cleanliness with beauty. They grow and maintain plants
and flowers that line the footpaths, making Mawlynnong indeed 'God's Own Garden'.
