Active and Passive Voice

Use Passive Voice When :

1. Focus is object

Sir Ali teaches Hussain. (Active)

Hussain is taught by Sir Ali. (Passive : the focus is object Hussain )

2. Subject is already Understood


Robots are manufactured in the industry. (Passive)

It is already understood who manufacture robots : scientists.

3. Subject is Unknown
My laptop has been stolen . (Passive)

Who stole my laptop ? obviously someone but I don’t know his identity.

Structure
USING THE AUXILIARY VERB “BE” The passive voice is formed by using a form of the auxiliary verb “be”
(be, am, is, are, was, were, being, been) followed by the past participle of the main verb.

Remember : The tense doesn’t change when active becomes passive or vice versa.

Subject Verb Object…. Ali plays hockey.

Object BE ( is am are, was were, being, been) V3 by Subject…. Hockey is being played by Ali.

Ali is playing hockey. Hockey is being played by Ali. ( ing verb becomes being)

Ali has written a novel. A novel has been written by Ali. (Add been to has/have/had )
Passive Voice is NOT Possible :
1. Perfect Continuous Tense

Ali has been reading a novel since morning. (Active)

A novel has been being read by Ali since morning.( Wrong Passive )

2. Intransitive Verb

He sells ice cream/He cries/ Birds fly. (No change)

3. Future Continuous

He will be reading the novel at this time tomorrow. (Active)

The novel will be being read by him at this time tomorrow. (Wrong passive )

(D) The box cannot be lifted by him.

5.She had cooked some dishes.


(A) Some dishes had been cooked by her.

(B) Some dishes was been cooked by her.

(C) Some dishes have been cooked by her.

(D) Some dishes has been cooked by her.

6. I do not use soap.


(a) Soap did not use by me.

(b) Soap has not been used by me.

(c) Soap was not used by me.

(d) Soap is not used by me

7. I saw a snake.

(a) A snake was seen by us.

(b) A snake had seen by me.

(c) A snake was seen by me.

(d) A snake is seen by me.

8. They help her.

(a) She was helped by them.

(b) She has helped by them.

(c) She had helped by them.

(d) She is helped by them.

9.Was the servant bringing tea?


(A) Has tea bring brought by the servant?

(B) Was tea being brought by the servant?

(C) Is tea being brought by the servant?

(D) Was tea bringing by the servant?

10. Siva guides me.

(a) I am guided by Siva.

(b) I have been guided by Siva.

(c) I am being guided by Siva.

(d) I was guided by Siva.

A. Which book had been read by you last days?

12. They have informed me, about their late arrival.


A. I have informed by them, about their late arrival.

16. She decided to call the police, when she saw two men.

A. It was decided by her to call the police, when she saw two men.
