Aim

To study the effect of time on the rate of crystallization.

Skip 4 line

Materials Required
1. Beakers (7)

2. Potassium nitrate (KNO₃)

3. Distilled water (200 mL)

4. Ice-cold water

5. Filter papers

6. Drying oven (70°C)

7. Weighing balance

8. Stirring rod

Procedure
1. Take a clean beaker and add 200 mL of distilled water to it.

2. Gradually add potassium nitrate (KNO₃) to the water while stirring to create a
supersaturated solution. Heat gently if necessary.

3. Filter the solution to remove any undissolved particles and measure the volume of the
filtrate.

4. Divide the filtrate equally into 6 clean beakers and label them as 10 min, 20 min, 30 min,
40 min, 50 min, and 60 min.

5. Place the beakers in ice-cold water to initiate crystallization.

6. After each time interval (10, 20, ..., 60 min), filter the solution from the corresponding
beaker.

7. Place the collected filter paper with crystals in a drying oven set at 70°C until completely
dry.

8. Weigh the dried crystals from each beaker using a balance and record the weights.
Observation Table
Beaker Label Cooling Time Volume of Weight of Dry Observations
(minutes) Filtrate (mL) Crystals (g)
Beaker 1 10
Beaker 2 20
Beaker 3 30
Beaker 4 40
Beaker 5 50
Beaker 6 60

Result
The weight of dry crystals increased with times is observed.
