Title
Materials & Relevant Tissue Interactions for Peripheral Nerve
Conduits
Abstract
Peripheral injuries can lead loss of function and therefore to physical
disability and chronic pain which may affect the health and lifestyle of the affected. Peripheral nerves however unlike it's central counterpart, can be regenerated
Various techniques have been developed to regenerate and repair nerve
damage such as the gold standard The autologous nerve graft and special surgical interventions. However, they do have those own complications which limit the compete regeneration of the nerve. one promising technique is the nerve conduit which combines biomaterials with growth factors that stimulates the nerve regeneration
Peripheral Nerve conduits are biomedical devices responsible for
facilitating joining peripheral nerves and facilitate peripheral nerve regeneration. The conduits uses a variety of classes of materials such as biopolymers and synthetic polymers as scaffolds and several surface modifications are utilized in order to achieve an effective regeneration of the peripheral nerve such as surface patterning. Many properties, be it structural or functional affect the performance of these conduits and must be selected carefully for optimal function
In this review, materials that make up the peripheral conduits will be
discussed as well as their tissue reactions, both desirable and undesirable ones. Properties and failure modes will be expanded upon, and fabrication techniques will be summarized. And it's ability to deposit growth and neurotrophic factors that stimulates the regeneration and enhances it .The aim of the review is act as gateway for those interested in neural tissue engineering and peripheral nerve regeneration as well as providing a recent reference and summary for new advances in this field
