Safety, Health & Environment Terms & Definitions S2-001-WI2

Acceptable Level: Controlled levels where hazards are insignificant in creating a safe work environment.

Audit: A systematic examination to determine whether activities and related results comply with
planned arrangements and whether these arrangements are implemented effectively and
are suitable to achieve objectives. Audits can be external or internal.

Auditor: Individual with the competence to conduct an SH&E audit.

Competent: A person determined to have the appropriate education, training, and experience necessary
to execute the particular task or activity safely.

Continual Process of enhancing the SH&E Management System to achieve improvements in overall
Improvement: SH&E performance, in line with our policy.

Control Measures: Precautions and arrangements taken to eliminate or reduce the hazards.

Corrective Action: Action taken to eliminate the cause of a detected non-conformity or undesirable situation
and prevent the problem from recurring.

Document: Information and supporting medium, including but not limited to, paper, electronic, pen
drives, CD / DVD.

Emergency: An unplanned situation or event resulting in involvement of the public emergency services,
police, fire, paramedic, or the environmental regulatory authorities.

Emergency A response effort by employees from outside the immediate release area or by other

Incident: An unplanned situation or event, in which harm or damage was experienced or was a
potential, including injury, ill health, fatality, environmental damage, or other loss.

Inspection: Project or site inspections of work practices and controls as they apply to project or
program specific to SH&E requirements

Interested Parties: Individual or group inside or outside of AECOM concerned with or affected by SH&E
performance.

Life-Preserving Industry best practices which have proven over time to be key factors in developing a

Near Miss: An incident that has the potential to cause harm but resulted in no injury, loss or damage.

Non-conformance: Non fulfilment of a requirement etc. that could either directly or indirectly lead to injury or
illness, property damage, damage to the workplace environment, or a combination.

Objectives: Goals, in terms of SH&E performance, that AECOM has set to achieve.

Organization: Company, operation, firm, enterprise, institution or association, or part thereof, whether
incorporated or not, public, or private, that has its own functions and administration.

Performance: Measurable results of the SH&E Management System, related to AECOM’s control of
health and safety risks and environmental impacts based on our policy and objectives.

Policy: Overall intentions and direction of AECOM related to our performance.

Preventive Action: Action to eliminate the cause of a potential non-conformity or undesirable potential situation
and to prevent them from occurring.

Procedure: Specified way of carrying out an activity or process.

Qualified: As applicable to the given jurisdiction, a person who by nature of a recognized degree,
certificate, or professional standing, or by extensive knowledge, training, and experience,
has successfully demonstrated his / her ability to solve or resolve problems relating to the
subject matter, the work, or the project.

Record: Document stating results achieved or providing evidence of activities performed.

Risk: Combination of the probability and severity of the consequence(s) of a specified hazardous
event.

Risk Assessment: Overall process of estimating the magnitude of risk arising from a hazard, taking into
account adequacy of control measures, and deciding whether or not the risk is acceptable.

Safety: Freedom from unacceptable risk of harm.

Scope: Range or extent of coverage. In this context used to define the activities and services
included in the SH&E Management System.

SH&E: Safety, Health and Environment

Significant: In this context used to denote those environmental aspects in relative terms that warrant
management action.

Site: In the context of this procedure, site includes offices and field work locations alike.

Stakeholders: Individuals or organizations that have an interest or responsibility in the business, whether
constructive or negative, and can directly or indirectly influence the business.

Stop Work: A directive to cease work issued for, but not limited to, failure to follow procedures,
imminent danger situation / conditions, accumulation of SH&E offences / violations.
