PROBLEM:
Part A.
Consider the belt drive which is loaded as shown below. The drive is only provided with variable dimensions and no materials
are assigned for each of the parts. Write the stress equation at each of the possible locations of failure. Identify each stress and write its
equation in terms of the shaft torque T, and the given dimensions w, b, h, t, efθ, 𝛼𝛼, Lk, Ls, Dp, etc. (Example: Torsional Stress in the
Shaft: Ss = 16T/πd3). Don’t use variables that are not defined in the drive described below. Support each of the stress equations by
means of an isometric drawing indicating the part and its dimensions that might have failed due to overstressing.
Part B.
Using the stress equations formed in Part A, design the drive by specifying the required dimensions of the parts. The drive is
to transmit 10 horsepower at an angular speed n = 800 rpm at the driven machine. The belt is made of a synthetic material whose design
stress is 500 psi. The shaft is made of AISI C 1030, normalized steel. The key joining the shaft to the pulley is made of an as rolled AISI
C 1020 steel. The pulley is made of cast iron ASTM 25. Consider a contact angle of 150 degrees at the driving pulley (not shown) and
a belt coefficient of friction of 0.33. Use the following proportions:
Consider a gradually applied load with mild shock. As an output of part B, present a scaled isometric drawing (not computer
aided) of the drive showing all the important dimensions preferably in their preferred sizes. Assume other proportions if necessary.
