Given A = {1, 2, 3, 4}, the maximum value of 2a + 3b is 20, when
(a, b) = (4, 4), and the minimum value of 4c + 5d is 9, when (c, d)
= (1, 1). Therefore, the possible values for 2a + 3b = 4c + 5d are
9, 13, 14, 17, 18, and 19.
Now, let's find the combinations of (a, b), (c, d) that satisfy the
given equation:
1. 2a + 3b = 9 ⇒ (a, b) = (3, 1) ⇒ (c, d) = (1, 1)
2. 2a + 3b = 13 ⇒ (a, b) = (2,3) ⇒ (c, d) = (2, 1)

Types of Relation

(1) Empty Relation


Let A be a set and ø ⊂ A × A, it follows that ø is a relation on A
which is called the empty relation.
For example,

(2) Universal Relation


Let A be a set and A × A ⊆ A × A, it follows that A × A is a
relation on A which is called the universal relation.
For example,

(3) Identity Relation


If every element of A is related to itself only.
Symbolically, the relation IA = {(a, a) : a ∈ A} is called an Identity
relation on A.
For example,
Let A = {1, 2, 3} then relation R1 on A , defined as
R1 = {(1, 1), (2, 2), (3, 3)} is an identity relation.

(4) Reflexive Relation


A Relation R on a set A is said to be reflexive, if every element of
A is related to itself.
Thus if R is reflexive, then (a, a) ∈ R, ∀ a ∈ A.

For example,
Let A = {1, 2, 3} then R1 = {(x, y) | y ≥ x} is a reflexive relation on A.

(5) Symmetric Relation


A relation R on a set A is said to be a symmetric relation iff
(a, b) ∈ R ⇒ (b, a) ∈ R, ∀ a, b ∈ A
i.e. a R b ⇒ b R a, ∀a, b ∈ A

For example,
Let A = {1, 2, 3} then R1 = {(1, 2), (1, 3), (2, 2), (2, 1), (3, 1)} is a
symmetric relation on A.

(5) Symmetric Relation


A relation R on a set A is said to be a symmetric relation iff
(a, b) ∈ R ⇒ (b, a) ∈ R, ∀ a, b ∈ A
i.e. a R b ⇒ b R a, ∀a, b ∈ A

Ex: Let A = {1, 2, 3} then R1 = {(1, 2), (1, 3), (2, 2), (2, 1), (3,
1)} is a symmetric relation on A.

Ex: Let A be the set of all lines in a plane. Relation R defined on


A as L1 R L2 ⇔ L1 ⊥ L2 is a symmetric relation.

(6) Transitive Relation


Relation R on set A is transitive if

Remark:
Relation is not transitive only when x R y and y R z but not x R z.
In all other situations R is Transitive.

(1) R1 = {(1, 2), (2, 3), (1, 3)} It is transitive relation.

(2) R2 = {(1, 2), (2, 3), (1, 3), (4, 5), (5, 1)} It is not a transitive
relation.

(3) R3 = {(1, 3), (2, 4)} is transitive.

(7) Equivalence Relation


Relation R defined on any set A is equivalence relation if
R is reflexive
R is symmetric
R is transitive

For example,
Let us Consider A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
Defined as R = {(1, 1), (2, 2), (3, 3), (4, 4), (5, 5), (1, 5), (5, 1)} is
equivalence relation.

f(x) = log√5 [3 + 2 cos(π/4) cos(x) - 2 sin (3π/4) sin(x)]


f(x) = log√5 [3 + √2(cosx - sinx)]
Since -√2 ≤ cos x - sin x ≤ √2
⇒ log√5 [3 + √2 - (-√2) ≤ f(x) ≤ log√5 [3 +√2 (√2)]]
⇒ log√5(1) ≤ f(x) ≤ log√5(5)
So, Range of f(x) is [0, 2]
