Learning Intent: At the end of the session, the learners can describe characteristics, strengths, and
weaknesses of research through:
a. Identifying the characteristics of quantitative and qualitative research by filling out a graphic
organizer.

Instructional Strategies

A. Context

All of us have our own strengths and weaknesses. We also have a distinct characteristic that describes us as
an individual. In the same manner, research has it also.

B. Concept Notes
Definition of Research
“If we knew what it was we were doing, would it not be called research, would it? - Albert Einstein

The word research was coined from the French word “cerhier” which means to seek. The prefix “re” means to
repeat. Literally, research is to repeat looking for something. Research signifies finding the truth again about ideas
and problems which were in existence before in different perspectives. In the Middle French “recerche” means to go
about seeking and “serche” to search.

Research is a systematic investigation, study of materials and sources of ideas to establish facts and reach new
conclusions. Research includes any gathering of data, information and facts for the advancement of knowledge. It
relates to a process of composite steps used to collect and analyze information to increase understanding of a topic
and ultimately generate knowledge first by posing a question, then collecting data to answer the question, and finally
presenting an answer to the problem. Leedy (1989) follows a more practical approach about research as a procedure
done to support a demonstrable fact in answering a question or resolving a problem. Kerlinger (2008) uses more
technical language to define it as the systematic, controlled, empirical, and critical investigation of hypothetical
propositions about presumed relations among natural phenomena.

Characteristics of Quantitative Research

1. Objective – seeks accurate measurement and analysis of target concepts;
2. Clearly defined research questions – research questions are well-defined for which objective answers are sought;
3. Structured research instruments – data are normally gathered using structured research tools such as
questionnaires;
4. Numerical data – data are in the form of numbers and statistics, often recognized and presented using tables,
charts, graphs and figures;
5. Large sample size – to arrive at a more reliable data analysis, a normal population distribution curve is preferred;
6. Replication – reliable quantitative studies can be repeated to verify or confirm the correctness of the results in
another setting; and
7. Future outcomes–by using complex mathematical computations and with the aid of computers, if-then scenarios
may be formulated thus predicting future outcomes.

Other Characteristics of Quantitative Research

- Reliable and objective
- Use statistics
- Reduce complex problem to simple variables
- Find connections between variables
- Test out hypothesis
- A sample represents a population
- Deals with the subjects’ details
Strengths of Quantitative Research
1. It is objective.
2. The use of statistical techniques facilitates sophisticated analyses and allows you to comprehend a huge amount
of vital characteristics of data.
3. The numerical data can be analyzed in a quick and easy way.
4. Quantitative studies are replicable.
Weaknesses of Quantitative Research
1. Quantitative research requires a large number of respondents.
2. It is costly.
3. The information contextual factors to help interpret the results or to explain variations are usually ignored.
4. Many information are difficult to gather using structured research instruments.
5. If not done seriously and correctly, data from questionnaires may be incomplete and inaccurate.

Guided Practice

Students will be task to browse and find a research articles to Google Scholar and Download a copy of it as their
reference. They will find one quantitative and qualitative research papers. The task is for them to identify the
characteristics of a quantitative research, its strengths and weaknesses. They will answer it through filling out the table to
be given by the teacher.

C. Independent Practice

Students will be given a sample quantitative research paper and will describe its characteristics. After which, students will
write an explanation as to why they have written those factors.They will answer it using the same table given by the
teacher.

Learning

Complete the box by filling out the missing characteristics of qualitative or quantitative research.
Quantitative Research Qualitative Research
1. Usually concerned with generating hypothesis from data
rather than testing a hypothesis
Has high output replicability 2.
Methods include census, survey, experiments, and 3.
secondary analysis
4. Uses more flexible processes
Uses large sample sizes that are representatives of the 5.
population
6. Uses either unstructured or semi-structured instruments
Aims to characterize trends and patterns 7.
Used to gain greater understanding of group similarities 8.
