 𝑦 = sin 𝑥
o Sinusoidal curve
o Range: −1 ≤ sin 𝑥 ≤ 1
o Period: 360° (2𝜋 radians)

 𝑦 = cos 𝑥
o Range: −1 ≤ cos 𝑥 ≤ 1
o Period: 360° (2𝜋 radians)

 Generally:
𝑦 = 𝑎 sin(𝑏𝑥 ± 𝑐) ± 𝑑
𝑦 = 𝑎 cos(𝑏𝑥 ± 𝑐) ± 𝑑
where,
𝑎: amplitude (vertical stretch factor 𝑎)
1 360°
𝑏: horizontal stretch factor , 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑜𝑑 =
𝑏 𝑏
𝑐: horizontal translation by 𝑐 units.
𝑑: vertical translation by 𝑑 units.

Q1. Sketch the graphs of the following functions for −180𝑜 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 360𝑜 .
a. 𝑦 = 4 sin 𝑥

b. 𝑦 = sin ( 𝑥)
2
c. 𝑦 = sin 3𝑥
d. 𝑦 = −2 sin 2𝑥
e. 𝑦 = 1 + 3 cos 𝑥
f. 𝑦 = 2 cos 3𝑥 − 1
g. 𝑦 = cos(𝑥 − 45)

Q3. 𝑦 = 𝑎 sin(𝑏𝑥) + 𝑐 , is shown in the
diagram. Find the values of 𝑎, 𝑏, and 𝑐.
State the range of 𝑦.

Q4. 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎 − 𝑏 cos 𝑥 for 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 360, where 𝑎 and 𝑏 are positive

constants. The max value of 𝑓(𝑥) is 8 and the minimum value is −2. Find
the value of 𝑎 and 𝑏.

Q5. 𝑦 = sin 𝑥 is reflected in the line 𝑥 = 𝜋 and then in the line 𝑦 = 1. Find
the equation of the resulting graph.

 𝑦 = tan 𝑥
o −∞ < tan 𝑥 < +∞
o Period: 180° (𝜋 radians)
 Generally: 𝑦 = 𝑎 tan(𝑏𝑥 ± 𝑐) ± 𝑑
where, 𝑎 is Not the amplitude and
180𝑜
period =
𝑏
