COURSE PROGRESS: 100% COMPLETE

Pace adjustments
Before we submit our form, we should make some fine-tuned adjustments to the schedule and
timing using the tools available to you. Once you have made the adjustments and made a schedule
in your calendar, you can submit your form to receive a copy as a PDF in your email. Submitting the
form will also give you access to the next stage, Fundamentals 2.

Practice predictor
The first and arguably most important tool is our Practice Predictor.

There are two ways to rush the course:

1. Simply going through the course material in a short period of time (binge-style)

2. Going through the course material slowly, but not having sufficient practice at each step

Both of these situations lead to an imbalance of theory vs practice. This combination massively increases
the chances of failure, with each new technique making accuracy and mastery exponentially more difficult.

To avoid this, you want your rate of theory to be matched to your rate of practice. We discuss the
difference between practice vs theory time here.

Use our practice predictor tool to see how many hours of theory you should schedule on a monthly basis to
get the most efficient results. Too little theory may cause you to progress slowly, whereas too much theory
requires much higher hours of practice.

Go To Practice Predictor

Remember, practice time is usually not “additional” to your current hours.

For example: If Jimmy studies for 20 hours per week using an ineffective technique, they may decide
to spend 30 minutes on the weekend learning new theory. They can now replace their existing
techniques while studying. Jimmy will still study for 20 hours per week, but 15% of the time is now
using a new technique. In this way, they would slowly but surely upgrade their entire study system.

Growth phase roadmap

Once you enter into the growth phase, your progress will slow down. This is because we are entering into a
progressive sequence of cognitive retraining.

This process cannot be rushed and requires extremely solid foundations. Our method of retraining is a
world-first to fundamentally change the way you process information and maximise your memory.

Use the Growth Phase Roadmap to help you estimate the time you will need to spend at each stage.

Go To Roadmap Generator

The advice from the Practice Predictor is superior to the Roadmap. If the Roadmap advises you to
spend 2 weeks on a stage but you feel this is inadequate to fit the recommended practice hours
from the Practice Predictor, follow the Practice Predictor instead of the Roadmap. The Roadmap
is simply to give you some expected estimates based on the experience of other students we have
observed.

Finalising your plan

Once you have finished, input it into your Calendar, as we taught you in the Rapid Start Modules. Make sure
to incorporate spaced interleaved retrieval sessions as well! Students often forget to schedule these
sessions.

Complete and submit the form to move on to the next stage!

How are you feeling?

Here’s the form if you didn’t open it priorly:

https://icanstudy.com/30-day-plan-creation/
You submit it by filling it out, and hitting the button at the bottom of the page.

Hey, should I schedule practice hours and SIR-hours separately? So, for example, have 1 hour of SIR and
2 hours of dedicated practice time a day.
I find that many techniques are automatically practised when doing SIR (scheduling, dealing with
procrastination, actual retrieval, etc.)

i think that SIR is for review/revision, and you could probably do them while also doing some other
practice…the practice is for studying in general it seems

I have a question
I have enough time to perfectly schedule 1 hour of theory every week-day, this means 21 hours of theory
and when I feed this info to the practice predictor it says that I need minimum 161 hours per month.
All this means that I will be overwhelmed and I am rushing?
I planned to study 1 technique (1 lesson) per day and later on during the day I assigned 1 hour block to
only practice that same technique

I’m not sure of your schedule or availability. The time spent is just an indicator you are rushing. You
should be focusing on yuour proficiency in the taught technique to determine if you are ready to move
on. And don’t be afraid to adjust the pace in case you need to spend more time on a technique.

are the spaced interleaved retrieval sessions the same as the revision session we put into our calendar

i have a question about the practice time! example theory: today i spent 20 minutes learning the theory
about Spaced= 20 minutes of theory this is simple. so i want to calculate the practice time using
“spacing”… but is not simple because i can only apply spacing the 1 day, the 3-4 day, 7 day, 1 month etc
So my practice with that tecnique is only for some short time. So how i can calculate the time with my
actual study? 1 hour studyng a day, using SIR= 1 hour practice? or for example 20% of the time, so 1hour
studyng=12 minutes of actual practice? p.s i know that i have to approximate but is more correct the first

The total practice time simply adds together all the time you spend dedicated towards the practice of
the theory.

I have a question regarding some of the considerations. Does In the “every 2 to 3 weeks, give time to
reflect on current study system” does that mean that we plan this 2-3 weeks ahead? Also, since we are
submitting this form before going through briefing, does that mean we can go back to the form as we
progress through the checkboxes?

When completing the form, are we allowed to put any goals down and complete the form based on
those goals or do they have to be related to iCanStudy?

I don’t quite understand how we should compare the practice predictoir(I will call it a) relatively to
Roadmap generator (I will call it b). a gives you info on how much to practice in hours, although b gives
you in weeks. if I want to prioritise A I can’t, because these two measurements don’t have a dependent
relationship.

Stick with the latest advice. As you are more advanced on the course, there is more information to
work with to give a more accurate prediction.

I have a question regarding SIR… I am in a highly regimented program that requires me to take test every
week in different subjects. For example, the first week, I will go through a rigorous program learning
Calculus 1, 2, & 3; Physics 1, Plant Systems. At the end of the week I take an example on plant systems,
and that is replaced with Chemistry 1. The following week after that I have a an exam on Physics 1 which
will now be replaced with Physics 2. The, the following week after that I will have an exam on Math
(covering Calculus 1, 2, &3), Once that is done now I am learning Heat Transfer 1 instead of math

Hi Brittney,
It appears you course is forcing you to perform SIR by giving you assessments spread out in this
manner. So all you need to do is be sure you are using the interleaving techniques before these
assessments to ensure you do well in the already spaced out assessments.

Are SIR’s similar to practice blocks? I’m confused in figuring out the difference between these two
sessions. From what I understand, SIR is a spaced interleaving retrieval session where we verify to see
how well we can pull information from our long-term memory by utilizing diverse interleaving
techniques. Practice blocks are meant to practice new techniques learned within ICS (in my case, it is 6
hours..) What is the main difference from these? Would this be the correct way of implementing both:
Use practice blocks for 6 hours in both learning new studying techniques and learning university
material.. (even though practice blocks are used to make mistakes when learning a new technique, I
don’t want 6 hours to go away… Read more »

Practice blocks are sessions you schedule in order to intentionally practice a certain technique.
SIR is simply one of the many things that you can practice.

Andy Cruz
 Reply to Ashton Sheares  7 months ago

With that being the case, how come in the article above it states to make sure to include in your
calendar both practice blocks and SIR, if SIR is considered already a form of practice?
Would that mean SIR can be implemented into the 6 hours of practice time?

during these practice and SIR sessions?

It’s exactly as what I have mentioned. Ensure your practice blocks implement techniques
taught. SIR is an included technique that you will continue throughout the rest of the
course and beyond so it will always be in your schedule. But you will have other practice
blocks for other techniques when you learn about them later.

At what mastery level should the techniques taught in the course so far be at to go to the next stage?
I feel like i have a grasp of the techniques and i am practicing them in my day to day life. I can’t say im
particulary scheduling to practice specific things, rather i am using the techniques in my studies and
everyday life everyday for the last 4-5 weeks.
However i still don’t feel like all the concepts are set in stone in my everyday life yet.
Is this an indication that i have rushed or are we supposed to feel insecurity on our level of mastery?

You should look at the current techniques, and when you almost do them by habit, you can consider
moving onto the next stage. You don’t want to reach a point where you move to the next stages and
fail to continue good practices from previous lessons.

Could a form of marginal gains whilst interleaving involve reflecting on a let’s say an essay you did, and
how you feel you improved and the pointers to look out for next time, critically evaluating how you
should look to improve the said essay per se. This is in the scenario of prior to handing the essay for a
teacher to mark. What could be the benefits of that? Thank you Ashton.

You can use Practice Questions (extended) for this scenario. Try to use an interleaving technique that
already in the table as it can push you to do the higher-order learning better.

Just by questioning your technique and analysing your progress, it helps to see if you are proficient
enough to move on.
So for SIR, you will be questioning how good you are at using the technique and tracking your progress
through marginal gains.
