Practice Assignment-1

1. Set up the differential equation for the oscillation of a system of two identical pendulums,
each having a bob of mass ‘m’ suspended by a rigid, weightless rod of length ‘l’ which are
coupled to each other by a spring of force constant ‘k’. Find out the expressions for normal
mode frequencies.
2. An experiment of Newton’s ring produces alternating bright and dark rings, explain the
formation of the rings with suitable diagram. Show that in a NR experiment, the diameter of a
dark ring is proportional to square root of natural number.
3. Briefly explain how NR can be used for determination of refractive index of an unknown
liquid.
4. Briefly explain determination of wavelength of an unknown light source using NR.
5. Discuss the two types of diffraction. Discuss the Fraunhoffer diffraction at a single slit and
thus obtain an expression for the resultant amplitude and intensity in a single slit diffraction.
Establish the condition for principal maximum, minima and secondary maxima in a single slit
diffraction pattern. Draw the necessary diagrams/graphs.
6. Give the equation of motion and general solution of a damped harmonic oscillator. Thus
discuss the possible types of damping. Find the solution to underdamping from the general
solution and give the amplitude versus time sketch.
7. The maximum amplitude of a forced oscillator is 4 cm. In weak damping condition, what will
be the maximum amplitude if the damping constant and the magnitude of the driving force
are doubled.
8. In a Wedge shaped thin film the wedge angle increases by pi radians, a previously bright
fringe will now appear bright or dark?
9. Amplitude of a damped oscillator of undamped frequency 100c/s is reduced to 1/20 th of its
initial amplitude after 100 cycles. Calculate its log decrement.
10. Graphically show the amplitude variation of a damped and a forced harmonic oscillator.
11. If two oscillators in a coupled oscillator are displaced by 2 cm to their right, what would be
the resulting mode of oscillation? Find the normal mode coordinate, frequency and angular
frequency?
12. Under what condition the path difference between two interfering beams reflected from a
wedge becomes equal to that of light reflected from a parallel thin film.
13. Diameter of Newtons ring reduce from 0.006 cm to 0.005 cm on changing the light source. If
the original light source was of wavelength 400 nm, what would be the wavelength of the
new light source.
14. The difference in diameter squares between the m and n th order rings in a NR set-up changes
from 0.0016 cm2 to 0.0012 cm2 on changing the medium in which the experiment was
conducted. Find the ratio of RI of the original medium of experiment to the new one.
