1. Scope of Works

Scope of Activities

This scope defines the minimum standards to be adopted when

installing Lightning Protection System according to construction co-
ordination drawings. A lightning protection system performs a simple
task. It provides a specified path on which lightning can travel. When a
building structure is equipped with a lightning protection system, the
destructive power of the lightning strike is directed safely into the
ground, leaving the structure and personal belongings unharmed.

Site Procedure

Site mobilization shall be done with real time monitoring the conditions
& progress of builder works. Before commencement of the work, carry
out examination of the physical condition of the area. Photographs
should be taken where necessary, prior to commencement and during
works.
2.Equipment / Tools / Machinery
According to Malaysia standard specification all material shall comply with the
specification such as quality, dimension, strength and others. Sample need to
be submitted to the Consultant for approval. All the material must follow the
specification as per consultant’s approval before any installation.

3.1.3 Active Genuine Care

 Care for self, care for others and let others care for you.
 Check for colleagues safety conditions and let colleagues care
for you.

3.1.4 Daily Checking of Tools and Power Tools Condition

 Send the power tools and manual tools for inspection.

3.1.5 Complete Daily Vehicles Safety Checklist

 Complete the checklist daily.

4. Access / Egress
Proper step ladders shall be provided for access and egress into Distribution
board as applicable.

5. Lightning
Adequate temporary/task lighting shall be provided if work to be carried at
night or at dark places.
6. Plant & Equipment

3 Hammer

4 Electrical drill (only for surface installation works)

5 Diagonal-Cutting Pliers

6 Wire Stripper/Cutter with Spring

7 Side-Cutting Pliers

8 Level

9 Shank Screwdriver

10 P.P.E. – Personal Protective Equipment (safety helmet, Boots,

gloves & safety vest )

*The above machinery & Equipment used quantity will be varied depending
on site conditions and production rate.
7. Waste Management
The Rubbish which would be created from our scope of works will be
disposed to the designated dumping ground.

8. Special Control Measurement

The following general control measures against Safety, Environment and
Quality shall be required for our scope of work and special control measures
are not applicable for us.

 Proper PPE must be worn at all time

 Permit to work at height > 2m where applicable
 Permit to work at height > 2m where applicable
 Confined space permit where applicable.
 Approved work method statement and risk assessment will be made
available to site. All workers doing the work shall be briefed on this
method statement and risk assessment.
9. Procedures

Below are the procedures that will be carrying out by representative

contractors:

Preparation before start the work

 To complete Hazard Assessment Forms.

 To develop Job Safety Analysis (JSA) together with area owner, job
owner, work executes and service providers. (If necessary)
 Obtain the working permit, Logout-Tagout (LOTO) (If necessary) and
Job Hazard Analysis (JHA).
 Ensure machinery and tools are inspected and certified fit to be used.
 Ensure material that are used for the work must be compliant.
 Use only latest and approved proposed drawings and materials.
 Barricade the work area.
 Housekeeping to be maintained at all working areas.
Method Statement

I. Preparation stage

a. The principle components of a conventional structural lightning protection

system

are

1. Air Termination Network

2. Down Conductors
3. Earth Termination Network
4. Bonding

b. Specification allows the use of 'natural conductors' such as rebars and

structural
steelwork, provided that they are electrically continuous and adequately
earthed.

c. Prior to install lightning protection system examine paths to ensure all areas
free
of debris that may interfere with the installation.

d. Inventory all items immediately after unloading, using manufactures packing

list.

e. All the related material should be stored away from high traffic areas.
II. Installation Stage

a. Site survey of the proposed Lightning Protection System based on approved

CSD
by foreman/sub-contractor together with Engineer.

b. Installation must be carried out based on approved shop drawings &

samples by
foreman/ sub-contractor.

c. Method and material used for the installation of Lightning protection system
shall
comply BS6651. (Protection of structure against lightning).

d. The earth electrode pits location shall be marked out on site before
commencement
of hammering in electrodes. The earth pits shall be near the location of the
down
conductors.

e. Those earth pits located in the basement shall be provided with seals to
prevent
penetration of the ground slab.

f. Electrodes are hammered into the ground and reading is taken to ensure
that the
resistance is less than 10 ohms per electrode.

g. Lightning Protection System accessories.

h. Earth rod clamps: Select a high copper content alloy earth rod clamp for the
connection of the earthing conductor to the earth rod. In this below ground
application, the clamp must ensure a good electrical contact and resist
corrosion throughout the lifetime of the installation.

i. Earth inspection chambers: Select an earth inspection chamber to protect

the earth electrode connection.
j. Bonding: Bonding is the most commonly employed method of avoiding the
damaging effects of side flashing. All continuous metalwork should be
considered of boding. All metallic services, eg cable armouring, gas, water or
steam piping, entering the building should also be bonded as directly as
possible to the earth termination network.

Select the correct type of metalwork bond of the application, ie a flat column
face, a circular rainwater pipe or a ribbed reinforcing bar.

k. Depending on the specification, the down conductor tapes can be thermal

weld to the rebar and casted in the column or run in a continuous strip on the
surface of the external wall.
l. For casting of column, floor, continuous supervision in necessary to ensure
that the tape is extended before the main builder close up form work before
casting Approved clamps to be used for extension tape.

m. Down conductor network: The down conductor system is the means of

carrying the current of a lightning strike safety to the earth termination
network.
n. Conductor fixing: Select the correct system of fixing for each part of the
conductor system.

o. Air termination network: The air termination network is the point of

connection for a lightning strike. It typically consists of a meshed conductor
arrangement covering the roof of the structure.

Use air terminals in the form of vertical air rod for the protection of
prominent roof top features or equipment. Use strike pads to expose
concealed conductors
p. Air terminal bases: Choose the correct air terminal base. This will ensure
that the vertical air rods are both solidly fixed to the fabric of the structure
and have a low resistance connection to the conductor network.

q. Conductor jointing clamps: Select a component for the interconnection of

multiple conductors or for changes of direction. Jointing clapms will ensure a
low resistance, corrosion resistant connection.
r. After installation, Engineer – in – charge shall check the complete works and
complete the inspection check list for Lightning Protection System installation
wors.

s. Engineer – in – charge shall arrange and request for inspection with the
Owner’s representative Residential Technical Officer (RTO) using approved
Main con Request for Inspection (RIN) form.
