Assignment 1: (Submission deadline: Oct.

26)

Q1. The U.S. AMPS system is allocated 50MHz of spectrum in the 800MHz range and provides
832 radio channels. Forty-two of these channels are control channels. The forward channel
frequency is exactly 45MHz greater than the reverse channel frequency.
(1) Is the AMPS system simplex, half-duplex or duplex? What’s the bandwidth for each
channel?
(2) Let’s suppose you are chief engineer of a cellular system using 7-cell reuse. Propose a
channel assignment strategy for a uniform distribution of users throughput in the cellular
system. Specially, assume that each cell has 3 control channels and specify the number
of voice channels you would assign to each cell. If each voice channel can support 6
users by TDMA. Specify the number of simultaneous uses that can be accommodated in
each cell.
(3) For an ideal hexagonal cellular layout which has identical cell size, what is the distance
between the centers of two nearest co-channel cells for 7-cell reuse? for 4-cell reuse?

Q2. A receiver in an urban cellular radio system detects a 1mW signal at d = d 0 = 1 meter

from the transmitter. In order to mitigate co-channel interference effects, it is required that the
signal received at any base station receiver from another base station transmitter which
operates with the same channel must be below -100 dBm. A measurement team has
determined that the average path loss exponent in the system is n = 3 . Determine the major
radius of each cell if a 7-cell reuse pattern is used. What is the major radius if a 4-cell reuse
pattern is used?

Q3. The U.S. Digital Cellular TDMA system uses a 48.6kbps data rate to support 3 users per
frame. Each user occupies 2 of the 6 time slots per frame. What is the raw data rate provided
for each user? Assume no preamble and trail bits in each frame.

Q4. If the received power at a reference distance d 0 = 1 km is equal to 1 mW, find the received

powers at distances of 2km, 5km, 10km, and 20km from the same transmitter for the
following path loss models:
(1). Free space;
(2). n=3
(3). n=4
(4). 2-ray ground reflection

Assume f=1800MHz, ht = 40m , hr = 3m , Gt = Gr = 0dB .

Q5. Approximately how large can the delay spread be in order for a binary modulated signal with
a bit rate of 25kbps to operate without an equalizer to cancel inter-symbol interference?

Q6. For a mobile receiver operating at frequency of 860MHz and moving at 100km/hr, sketch the
Doppler spectrum if a cosine wave signal is transmitted and indicate the maximum and
minimum frequencies.
