Topic:

LEVEL: intermediate \ upper intermediate

Aim: to provide students with the different use of dialects and special vocabulary
of traditions.

Materials: -
intermediate and advanced. Cambridge: CUP.

Detailed process of the lesson.

Warm up

Materials: warm up handout


Objective: introduce the focus of the lesson
Procedure: Teacher asks students to remember some customs or tradition in their
families and regions. Ss should write some key words of each custom they
remember

Activity 1

Objective: taking new information about topic about and learning new words
Procedure: find which traditions and customs of Great Britain in a picture and
describe events of UK.

The United Kingdom's culture is influenced by its history as a developed


state, a liberal democracy and a great power; its predominantly Christian religious
life; and its composition of four countries England, Scotland, Wales and
Northern Ireland each of which has distinct customs, cultures and symbolism.

Every nation and every country has its own traditions and customs, which
make them individual. Some traditions are old-fashioned, interesting and
important. English traditions can be classified into several groups: traditions
wedding anniversary); state traditions; national holidays, religious holidays, public
festivals, traditional ceremonies.

British holidays (Christmas, Easter, Guy Fawkes Night, and Remembrance


Day) are especially rich in old traditions and customs. Cheese rolling is an unusual
British tradition that involves a ball of Double Gloucester cheese and a crowd that

is willing to chase it for fun. The cheese rolling event takes place every Spring
Bank Holiday Monday of the year

There are numerous Royal traditions in Britain, some are ancient, others
modern. The Queen is the only person in Britain who has two birthdays. Her real
birthday is on April 21st
second Saturday in June.

On this day, there is a, traditional ceremony called the Trooping of the


Colour. It is a big parade with brass bands and hundreds of soldiers in London.

Glossary

Tradition - a belief, custom, or way of doing something.

Custom something that is done by people in particular society.

National related to a whole nation as opposed to any of its parts.

Celebrate to show that an event or occasion is important by doing something.

Coincide to happen at the same time as something else, especially by chance.

Remembrance Day the Sunday nearest to November 11.

Boxing Day a national holiday in England and Wales on the day after Christmas
