HASA - Youth Soccer - WEEK 1 sample

These sessions are applicable to all ages with a little adjusting. A big part of this practice would be to introduce everyone
and get to build a report with the players. Try to relate to them on their level. Have fun with them, crack jokes, make up
nick-names. Coaches should challenge your players by making everything you do into races or who can jump the highest or
who can come in the quickest or who can collect the most cones. Players love to be challenged; it is our job to stay one
step ahead of them. Young players believe that Effort = Success, we should acknowledge that in all players at this level.

 Warm up - Free movement – Players dribble their

ball around the practice area as coach “calls” out
instructions for the players to follow. This can be
“follow the leader” for younger players.
o Stop the ball with different body parts. Foot,
knee, elbow, head, butt,
o Mix it up a little – Add two body parts – Stop
the ball with head then knee
o “Change” when coach calls “change” players
leave their ball and quickly run to get
someone else’s ball.
o Add stretching into the calls.
 New footskills- In the same format as “free movement” Players are introduced to new skills. Use both feet.
o Pull back – The player puts their foot on the ball and “pulls” it back behind them. The player can see the
ball at all times as they turn with the ball as they pull it back.
o Inside Cut – Players dribbling use the inside of their foot to change direction 180 degrees.
o Outside Cut – Players use the outside of their foot to change direction 180 degrees
o After players turn they should accelerate into space.
 1V1 Game – Dribble back to 2 goals.
o Coach stands between 2 groups of players
with a supply of balls. There are 2 goals
beside the players. Coach rolls a ball into the
practice area. 1 player from each group runs
for the ball. They try and use their new
turning skills and dribble the ball back to
score in either 1 of the goals.
o Have players start off, kneeling, lying down,
and sitting down.
 Scrimmage - Practice should finish off with a game to
goals. Divide your team up, use coaches or parents to
make it 4v4 on each team. The kids love it when coach plays. Just remember Coaches, you may be the best player
on the field but save your skills for your adult league. Let the kids have the success of beating you. Go 10% or 50%,
just enough to challenge your players!! Practices should always finish off with a high five or team cheer.
