Film Review: Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo

"Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo" was a film directed by Enzo Williams releasedon
2014 which grasped on a historical genre that enables people to be enlightened
onthe heroic and nationalistic acts during a very significant time in our history as
Filipinos.
The film has greatly showcased how Andres Bonifacio, Father of the Philippine
Revolution, fought for the freedom of the oppressed Filipinos amidst the Spanish
colonial regime. From the beginning, Bonifacio already has a lot in mind with
regards to the revolt against the Spaniards even asking Jose Rizal about his
ideology towards armed resistance. He was depicted as an activist who is willing
to wield a weapon to bring about change in the society. Bonifacio believed that
blood will be inevitably shed as they fight for freedom. With this, the eagerness
to risk and do everything in his powerjust to get the sought for independence is
very evident and this is one of the groundswhy the Katipunan grew in number.
Andres Bonifacio was ultimately the reason whymany people joined the revolt
through his poem "Pag-lbig sa Tinubuang Lupa"published under the first issue of
Kalayaan. He was the one who sparked and even more ignited the people's
already burning desire to be set free from the oppressor.
Being the Presidente Supremo of the Katipunan, although his credibility to be
such was doubted by some, he was a very effective leader. Through his efforts
indevising different strategies on going against the Spaniards, the people some
how were able to initiate an attack that alarmed those in higher ranks about the
determination ofthe Filipinos to achieve independence. It is in this sense that
Andres Bonifacio is indeed very significant in the Philippine Revolution for he is
the one who pioneered this revolt and it was through him that the Filipinos back
in the days were able to harness great strength and courage to fight for what
they deserve- a scene outstandingly portrayed in the film. He was the kind of
leader who possesses a tremendous amount of courage and takes pride on his
desire to provide a better society for the people of his time and for the next
generations. As the film was about to reach the ending, a scene of Katipuneros
charging after the execution of the Bonifacio brothers was shown. This part has
resonated the most for this also support how effective Andres Bonifacio's
leadership was. He was able to instill great determination, courage, and hope on
the Katipuneros for even in his absence they were still willing to push through
with the crusade against the Spaniards.
To conclude, the film successfully served its purpose on shedding light to those
who need it regarding Bonifacio's stead fast commitment on quenching his thirst
for freedom which led to a society that united Filipinos to engage on a revolt
against the Spanish colonial rule.
