Ans: Democracy, as defined by Abraham Lincoln, is a government of the people,
by the people and for the people.

2.What do you mean by the term ‘media’?


Ans: The channels through which we interact and commnunicate with the rest of
the world and learn about it.Together, they constitute what we call the media.

3.Name the two agencies of mass media.


Ans : The two agencies of mass media are as follows:-
-Print Media
- Electronic Media

4.What is the function of the Press Council of India?


Ans: The Press Council of India as a body protects the freedom of the press. It also
works towards maintaining and improving the standard of newspapers in the
country.

5.What is the full form of PIO?


Ans : Public Information Officer

QV.Answer the following questions in brief:

1. How does the media help in the formation of public opinion?


Ans: 1. Public opinion is formed on the basis of information that people gather
from the various sources of media that they are exposed to on a daily basis.
2.On the basis of the information given in newspapers and magazines, on
television and the internet, people form opinions about the functioning of the
government, social issues and the developments around the world.
3.In the age of globalization, it is the media that spreads information in the
world and shapes public opinion.
2. How does the media act as a bridge between the government and the
public?
Ans: The media also act as a bridge between the people and the government:
1.Programmes such as current affairs, interviews and political/social analysis
on television and radio, articles and letters written by people in newspapers
and magazines provide a platform for discussion and debate on various social,
economic and political issues.
2.Through such programmes, mass media provides a forum for people to
express their grievances and opinions and interact with people in the
government.
3. The government is sensitive to public opinion. If a government does not
respond to the just demands of the people, it may be voted out of power in
the elections.

3. How does the media keep a check on the activities of the government in a
democracy?
Ans:-1. Reports in the media about corrupt practices and irresponsible conduct
of members of the government makes people aware of the weakness of the
government.
2. The media often builds pressure on a government to address important
social , political and economic issues , or pay heed to the public opinion.
3. It also raises questions about the functioning of the government and makes
the public aware of lapses on the part of the government.

4. What are the factors that prevent media from being free and fair?
Ans:- 1. The control of big business houses and advertisers over media often
leaks to control over the information that is published and broadcasted , which
may prevent information from being unbiased.
2. Similarly , many a time , reports in the media are not balanced because they
do not take into account all points of views and facts related to the subject.
3. Most media tend to focus on those aspects of an event , news or story
which they think will make the story more interesting or which will increase
public support for a particular issue.

5. What are the different checks and balances that have been imposed upon
the Indian media ?
Ans:- 1. All newspapers and magazines, for example , have to be registered
with the Registrar of Newspapers Of India . They cannot print anything
which is offensive or which prompts people to act in an unlawful way .
2. The code of conduct has been laid down which prevents journalists from
reporting events irresponsible and in a sensational manner .
3. The Press Council Of India as a body protects the freedom of the press . It
also work towards maintaining and improving the standard of newspapers
in the country .
4. The Newspapers and other forms of media have to uphold the ideals of
secularism , democracy , national unity and the rule of law as enshrined in
the Constitution Of India .
