Exploring the Benefits of Robotic Assistance in the Work Environment

CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the Study:


Robotics is one of the most significant technological advances in the world today,
representing cutting-edge electronics and automation. Across many countries, robotics has
become essential in various industries, helping improve efficiency, precision, and productivity in
both industrial and commercial sectors. As the world continues to evolve, nations are
increasingly investing in robotics to aid human labor and enhance technological capabilities.

Robots are embodied machines equipped with sensors and actuators and some
(potentially limited) degree of artificial intelligence, typically able to perform tasks associated
with particular types of work (Royakkers and van Est 2015). Robots come in many shapes and
differ with respect to their degree of flexibility and the functional autonomy with which they
perform a single task or a variety of tasks.

The introduction of robotics in the workplace aims to make tasks easier and improve
overall efficiency. Research indicates that the automation of certain tasks through robotics can
lead to more meaningful work, as it allows humans to focus on tasks that require higher
cognitive skills (J. Smids et al.). However, the advent of robotics is not without concerns. While
robots can enhance work environments, some view them as a threat, fearing job displacement
and the dehumanization of labor.

One significant concern is the dependency of workers on robots, which may


inadvertently lead to a reduction in the perceived meaningfulness of their work. As workers
become more reliant on automation, there is a risk that their unique skills could be
overshadowed, making them feel replaceable. Additionally, the fear of technological
unemployment has garnered considerable attention, with critics arguing that robots could
replace human workers, leading to unemployment and social displacement. With respect to
work in general, the fear of technological unemployment as a result of robots replacing human
workers has received significant attention (Brynjolfsson and McA fee 2016; Ford 2016). Given
the centrality of work in many people's lives, losing one's job may constitute a threat to living a
meaningful life (Danaher 2017).

On the positive side, robotics can contribute significantly to the technological


advancement of the country, boosting industries, and improving the overall standard of living. As
the world becomes increasingly reliant on technology, it is crucial for countries like the
Philippines to focus on how robotics can enhance the work environment and contribute to
long-term economic growth. As technology continues to advance, the role of robots will only
expand, and their presence will shape the future of work in the coming decades.

Statement of the Problem:


With robots evolving and countries becoming technologically dependent—what about
workers if the presence of robots will be the bridge to the more distant future. How robotics can
be beneficial in the future and the work of people; as the world becomes more dependent on
electronics and technologies. The study will focus on these following questions:

Research Question:
1. How will students gain from understanding robots and how it might simplify their
academic work?
2. What potential benefits can robotic assistance offer college students?
3. In the coming years, what advantages will robotic aid the workplace offer?

Scope and Delimitation:


This research aims to determine the correlation of Robotics Assistance in the work
environment. Students, industrial workers, and the medical profession may all benefit from
robotics. Industrial personnel is an example of how robotics may aid those who work in offices,
while the medical industry, particularly surgeons and nurses, can benefit from its support. On the
other hand, robotics has the potential to enhance students' education and expand their
understanding of electronics and technology.

The research will only include seven medical students in Central Luzon Doctors' Hospital
- Educational Institution, and three STEM students. The faculties and teachers are also included
in the research on what is their view on how robotics can help in the work environment in the
future. With the given parameters, this will provide a focused investigation into the relationship
of Robotic Assistance and its benefits in the meaningful Work Environment

Significance of the Study:


This study is to show how people's work can be facilitated in the future and how much
robots will help the workers. This study wants to expand the knowledge of people in
technologies and robotics.

This study is for:

To Students. This study will give students valuable information that may be applied in
their studies. By understanding the relationship of robots with humans and how robots can
assist them in education and build a promising future.

To Medical Workers. This study will provide insights into what will be the benefits of
robotic assistance in their work field. The study findings will improve accuracy and reduce
infection risk and even though robots can perform such tasks, they still need professional
supervision.

To Company Workers. This result of the study will enhance productivity in tasks such
as sorting and packing. Especially the companies that have the most need for robotic
assistance in terms of facilitating work especially in the industry.

To the Future Researchers. This study will serve as a basis for future studies related to
the benefits of Robotic Assistance in the work environment. These findings will also serve as a
foundation for the researchers to study how robotics will be helpful in the workforce and the
impact of robotics to the workers. It can be used to build useful strategies to increase the
awareness and positive impacts of robotics in the work environment of the people in the future
technology advancement.
