INTRODUCTION

Climate change is one of the most pressing global challenges of the 21st
century. It refers to long-term changes in temperature, precipitation,
and other atmospheric conditions on Earth. The primary driver of
current climate change is human activity, particularly the burning of
fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial processes, which release
greenhouse gases (GHGs) like carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄)
into the atmosphere.
Climate Change Awareness
Climate is a general pattern of atmospheric
condition in a given area over periods ranging
from at least 30 years to thousands of years based
primarily on the area's coverage, annual
temperature and annual amount of precipitation
(MYERS 2018).

Climate change is a change in regional or global

climate patterns due to natural or man-made
factors.
.
SIGNS OF CLIMATE CHANGE
EFFECTS ON WEATHER &
WATER CYCLE
5. EXCEPTIONAL 6. ARCTIC &
HEAT WAVES ANTARCTIC WARMING
– surface land temperatures – sea ice cover on the poles
have been rising in places shrinking since 30 years ago
which were once moderate.

HOT AND COLD INTERPLAY

7. FLOODING 8. CHANGE IN
SEASONALITY
– experienced in places which
were not flood-prone before – disruptions in precipitation
(rain or snow) in excess of the
normal range.

SEASONAL DISRUPTION & FLOODS

EFFECTS IN TEMPERATURE
CLIMATE CHANGE
AWARENESS
The world joined hands in an international agreement to control
climate change.

The agreement is the Kyoto Protocol, a treaty of many countries

with the objective of reducing the emission of hazardous gases:
carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, flourine and other
dangerous pollutants.
Causes of Climate Change

Environmental Impacts:
Rising global temperatures and melting polar ice caps contribute to sea-level rise.
Increased frequency and severity of extreme weather events like hurricanes,
floods, and droughts.
Biodiversity loss as habitats are altered or destroyed.

Social and Economic Impacts:

Agriculture and food security are at risk due to changing weather patterns.
Health crises arise from heatwaves, vector-borne diseases, and poor air quality.
Economic costs from disaster recovery and adaptation measures strain resources,
especially in developing countries.

Global Inequalities:
Vulnerable populations in low-income countries are disproportionately affected
despite contributing less to GHG emissions.

Impacts of Climate Change

Man is threatened by the following risks of climate
change (Mathews 2015)

Environmental degradation
Harm to plants and animals
Hazard to human health
Deterioration of air and water
qualities through pollution
Deterioration in profitable
production of agricultural products
Human overpopulation and its
behavior in the consumption of
natural resources are big factors to
consider in climate change.

Risks of Climate Change

The Environment Management Bureau, the
main environmental agency of the
Philippines, with its mandate to implement,
enforce the laws of Environmental Impact
Assessment(EIA) and the four anti-pollution
laws are implemented to minimize impacts
to climate change;
 Republic Act 6969 - Toxic substances and hazardous
and nuclear wastes control Act of 1990

 Republic Act 8749 - Clean Air Act of 1999

 Republic Act of 9275 - Clean Water Act of 2004

 Republic Act 9003 - Ecological Solid Wastes

Management Act of 2000
WAYS TO MITIGATE
CLIMATE CHANGE
1. ADVOCATE FOR CHANGES IN ENERGY SYSTEMS
2. USE RENEWABLE ENERGY
3. USE LOW-CARBON SOURCES OF ELECTRICITY AND
TRANSPORTATION – USE ELECTRIC CARS
4. CONSERVE ENERGY
5. CONSERVE WATER
6. WALK, BIKE, CARPOOL, OR USE PUBLIC
TRANSPORT
7. CONSERVE AND RESTORE FORESTS
8. PRACTICE CLIMATE FRIENDLY GARDENING
AND AGRICULTURE
WAYS TO MITIGATE
CLIMATE CHANGE
9. EAT LESS MEAT AND MORE PLANT-BASED FOOD

10. CONSUME LESS & REDUCE YOUR INDIVIDUAL

CARBON FOOT PRINT
Role of Individual

Every individual can contribute to combating

climate change by:
Reducing energy consumption and waste.
Supporting sustainable products and
practices.
Raising awareness about climate issues in their
communities.
Climate change poses significant threats to
the planet, but proactive measures at global,
national, and individual levels can mitigate its
effects. Collaboration, innovation, and a
commitment to sustainability are essential to
ensure a livable planet for future generations.
