CLASS/LEARNER There are seventeen students in the class. Caribbean History


They are from neighboring communities to
PROFILE the school. They are from a rural middle to
upper class socio-economic background.

Students are very cooperative, energetic, and


willing to learn. Students’ reading levels vary.
More than 50% of the class is not reading at
their grade level. They do not have adequate
learning resources. There are no textbooks or
booklists provided by the department.
Approximately 50% of the students are visual
learners and 20% are auditory learners and
other remaining 20% are kinesthetic learners.
While 10% are yet to discover their learning
style.

1. Have you ever wondered how do historians find out about


the past? For example, that dinosaurs existed, or that
Egyptian kings and queens were mummified.
2. How did they know when Christopher Columbus came to
Jamaica? Or that the Tainos were the first initiators in
Jamaica?
3. Were they there to witness what took place?
4. How did they get the information?

Students will be asked to share their ideas, and responses captured


on the board. Students’ curiosity and critical thinking will be
activated and prompt students to think about how historical
information is collected.

A short digital story will then be shown, listing the steps historians
take to gather information. These steps will introduce the selection
of sources.

Focus Questions:

EXPLORE: Students will be provided with a definition of primary and


(Information Activities) secondary sources on a chart. They will be asked to record a
definition in their own words. A list of sources will be given.
Students will be asked to state whether the source is primary,
secondary, or oral and state why based on the definitions.

EXPLAIN To explain, students will share their findings, any misconceptions


(Information Activities) will be clarified.

ELABORATE/ EXTEND: Give students a worksheet with various scenarios and sources
(Application Activities) (e.g., a photo from the Civil Rights era, a biography, an
interview with a historian).

Practice: Students categorize each as primary, secondary, or


oral and justify their choices.

Discussion: Encourage students to share their reasoning with


the class to clarify understanding.

EVALUATE: Write down one example of a primary source and one of a


secondary source they might use if they were researching a
