ARUN CHANDIRAN ELANGO

Piano, Grade 5

Overall result: Merit

J. F. F. Burgmüller: La chevaleresque (No. 25 from 25 études faciles et 25/30

progressives, Op. 100)
Despite the cautious tempo at the start, there was a perky feel to the texture, with wide ranging
dynamics, and some extra momentum was gathered as you progressed. The touch was over-weighty at
times, though there was a flowing feel on occasion, with a committed ending.

Tchaikovsky: Douce rêverie (No. 21 from Album pour enfants, Op. 39) 25/30
The tempo was just right here and you caught the expressive side of the music with shapely phrasing
and a well projected melody in each hand. There was a subtle rubato which was stylish, though there
were a couple of slips and there was significant over-pedalling which blurred the texture. However there
was often a fluent pulse.

Gillock: Mister Trumpet Man (from New Orleans Jazz Styles) 27/30
A bold and committed start was made and this was colourful playing, with a clearly jazzy spirit. Not all
was quite rhythmic, with the odd slight slip in the notes, though there was often a fluent feeling to the
pulse and the texture was characterfully buoyant.

Scales and arpeggios 19/21

The scales were a bit moderate in pace for the grade, though the arpeggios were better paced and
overall these were all secure and rhythmic, at times with shape and flow.

Sight-reading 15/21
Tthere was often a sense of pulse and rhythm here, though there were frequent slips in the notes and
the key wasn’t always reliable.

Aural Tests 15/18

The tempo was incorrect here, with minor errors in singing and clapping, though all else was prompt and
accurate.
