Resource Potential of Algae

ALGAL PRODUCTS
ALGAL PRODUCTS AND ITS APPLICATION
OIL SOURCE - COMPARISON
Energy from Algae
• Compared with second generation biofuels, algal fuels (Third
generation) have a higher yield

• They can produce 30-100x more energy per hectare compared to

terrestrial crops

• Algae can produce different biofuels: Bioethanol, vegetable oils, bio

diesal, bio oil, bio syngas and bio hydrogen

• Production of these biofuels can be coupled with flue gas CO2

improvement, waste water treatment and the production of high value
chemicals

Fatty acid and High value oils
Very long PUFA (Poly unsaturated fatty acid)
• Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
• Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
• Arachidonic acid (AA)

Application:
• Promotes Flexibility, fluidity and selective permeability to cellular membrane
• Helps in Brain development
• Beneficial for cardiovascular system
• Used as Nutraceutical for human and animal health
Algae Biopolymers and surfactants
• Long chain polymers present in the algae lipids are used for making bioplastics
• Algae is attractive to bioplastics because of its high growth rate and high protein
content
• Naturally occuring polymer have many application in medical, pharmaceutical and
food industries
• Biodegradable poly hydroxy alkanoates (PHA) are promising biopolymer which can
be altenative to the petroleum based polymer
• PHB(Poly hydrate butyrate) is the most abundant PHA which is the homopolymer
of PHB that presents in various microalgae.
Microalgae as food
• Human food

 It has protein content

 30 of the food in Astronauts is algae due to high protein
content.
 Also called as super food.
 Few examples: Chlorella, Spirulina, Dunaliella, Hematococcus
Microalgae as animal feed

• Crustacean
• Shrimp
• Cattles
• Fishes
Microalgae in Space research
• Algae produce oxygen

• Chlorella and Euglena grown in

photobioreactor is used to produce oxygen
in the space for the Astronauts using their
waste and help them for long term
expedition in space

• NASA and many other space research

station in the world open opportunities for
planktologist
Energy production
Biohydrogen production

• Photosynthetic microorganism are attracting nowadays by high photosynthetic,

conversion efficiencies diverse metabolic capabilities, superior growth rate, and
ability to store or secrete energy rich hydrocarbons.

• Two methods :

1) Microalgae uses the light energy to produce hydrogen from ater

2) Bacteria capable of fermenting the carbohydrates (either structural or stored in

the microalgal cellwall) are utilized to produce hydrogen

• Several photobioreactors have been developed for large scale biomass and
hydrogen production
Algal Methane production
• In a biogas reactor the substrate used are converted in several
reaction steps into biogas, consisting mainly of the components by
of methane and carbondioxide.

• The biogas yield of plants is generally limited by the greater or

lesser proportion of lignocellulose, which is difficult to recycle.

• However , the use of microalgae with a low lignocellulose content,

for example Spirulina, Chlorella, permits an atmost complete
utilization of the orgnaic substrate
