Interview Questions with Consolidated Answers:

1. What is your existing drinking water source?

All of the respondents used municipal water source for laundry, bathwater and other
water utilization except as drinking water. Some of them use water pump from borewells. Only 4
respondents used municipal and water district as their direct drinking water source. The other six
respondents tend to drink from mineral water in containers, canned water and filtered water
(water filter brought from online shop).

2. How would you describe the importance of water in your daily lives?

All of the respondents emphasized the importance of water in their day- to- day routine. They
deemed it as primary factors for survival. Some of them even mentioned that they can go by
without electricity or light for days and weeks, however, without or with less water, it is hard for
them to do their daily routines and much less survive without drinking water.

3. What are the challenges or problems you encounter in your household water source and how do
you deal with it?

The respondents have several challenges regarding their household water source.

 Respondents who bought mineral water as their drinking water source mentioned
the high expense of it, however, they would prefer those expense than to have less
safe drinking water.
 There would be water crisis in urban areas especially during the weekends as the
consumers increase their water usage. In this case, they would use their back up
water pump.
 During rainy days in rural areas, water flow from municipal/ barangay water district
is either low or nonexistent especially through high elevated faucets. They would
have to wait for the rain to stop so that they can have good water flow once again.
 In connection to the previous statement, one respondent told the interviewer that
during rainy seasons, they would get murky, clay colored water.
 One respondent in an urban area mentioned that during dry and rainy seasons, they
would have water crisis in their district water line. They’d use their backup well for
laundry and bathing in times like these.
 A respondent that uses a borewell mentioned that there were rusts along the pump
and they would boil water from the well if it is to be used for drinking in cases of
emergencies.

4. How motivated are you to address the problems you encounter in relation to water conservation
and sanitation?

Page | 2
Most of the respondents were very motivated to address the problems in relation to
water conservation. They have different ideas and ways in tackling this issue. Students, stay-at-
home, and non-government worker respondents tends to lean in disseminating information on
water conservation and sanitation, and personal discipline. One respondent was a barangay
official and he tends to help fix water maintenance issues in a practical way. One respondent
however, was not motivated to tackle the issue of water conservation in the community.

5. In your own opinion, what are the best method to address problems relating to water
conservation and sanitation in general?
 Discipline in consumption and water reuse. Example, laundry water can be used in
the bathroom for flushing.
 One practice in conserving water is to store rainwater for cleaning areas in the
household. As for water sanitation, boiling water to achieve safe drinking water.
 Creating an organization to solve water issues because the issue on contaminated
water is still currently affecting many people.
 Push through in discovering more sources of water particularly ground water to
accommodate the needs of the consumer.
 The government should find ways to provide barangays fresh and clean water.
Maybe give a water tank to each household.

6. What is your opinion regarding water sanitation and water crisis in the neighborhood?

The respondents have different views regarding water sanitation and crisis in their own
communities. In urban areas, they think that water crisis comes hand in hand with the dense
population in the area. A lot of consumers with not enough resources.
People in rural areas can utilize water from different sources such as using the river to do
laundry and wash dishes. In connection, the importance of river cleanliness with no garbage
presence is emphasized.
One respondent mentioned that if the problem is water sanitation, people from both
rural and urban households could utilize the filtration method in order to make the water usable
for drinking purposes, taking baths and doing laundry work. If the problem is low supply or daily
water interruption which is a responsibility of the municipal or city government, they can create
borewells, submersible or hand pump.

7. What are the home water treatment capabilities are you willing to provide to improve water
quality and sanitation in your home? And why?

One respondent was satisfied with their current method of buying mineral water in
containers. Most of the respondents would like to use filter technology in their households but
considering that such technology is expensive, they resort to boiling water or sticking to mineral
water.
A respondent listed home water treatments that they can utilize. Examples of these treatments
were water purifiers, water filters, products for water disinfection, and powder that can reduce

water-borne microorganisms. They also mentioned that it is also good to build household
systems that ensure the presence of safe water that can be used.

8. Have you ever heard/seen/used water filter technologies? (How and how often?)
60% of the respondents have heard and seen water filter technologies, however,
because it is a costly technology, they could not afford it for there household. 20% have used it
but not constantly for the same financial reason. 20% of the respondents have never heard of it.

9. Following the previous question:

If yes, what filter method do you commonly use?
If no, what filter method do you want to try utilizing for your household? (Ex. filtration system
such as sawyer squeeze, pump filter, gravity filter, chemical water treatment (tablets), Boiling
Water, etc.)

The following filter methods were mentioned:

 Boiling water is one of the basic traditional ways for safe water consumption but
considering such method is not 100% guaranteed safe. It is better to try using
filtering technology that treats and clean contaminated and uncontaminated water.
 Pump Filter
 Filter technology from the source such as ground water filter so that the whole
barangay can use it.
 Manual method, boiling the water first, then get filtered through sand, charcoal and
other filter sediments.

10. What do you think is the reason why water insanitation and water crisis is still a constant problem
in many urban and rural households in Philippines regardless of advancing technologies?

Reasons provided by the respondents:

 Poor management and weak implementation of laws related to water conservation

and sanitation.
 Lack of discipline in consuming water.
 Other people also do not know the importance of preserving the environment and
conserving water. The cost of improving forest conditions and acquiring technologies
that can help improve water quality is very high, and some people cannot afford to
buy them. The lack of knowledge and understanding of technology is also a problem
because if people do not know the technologies that can help improve forest
conditions and conserve water.
 Population is rapidly increasing, and the more people living in urban areas the more
water is being consumed which the water source cannot accommodate the needs of
the consumer.
 Lack of competition in water sector business and most importantly the Philippines is
are far away from modern technologies and innovations that can reuse water from
the building, houses and convert sea water into drinking water.

Page | 4
 It is mainly lack of awareness to water filter technologies. Although, it is
implemented in some localities, many people depend on water refilling stations
which is very rampant nowadays instead of buying filter devices at home where they
believe it’s pricy when in fact there are some that is cheaper.
 *One main reason why problems in water sanitation still occur in many urban and
rural areas is because of lack of orientation to people about how and what to do
during water crisis. They are not knowledgeable enough about such methods and
techniques on water sanitation/filtration. Hence, advancing technologies are
nothing if you don't share and introduce it to others.

Hypothesis Validated or Repudiated?

Hypothesis on water conservation and sanitation problem validated. The hypothesis on

households from rural and urban areas thinking that filter technologies are costly and therefore
cannot be utilized regardless of the motivation to use it, is also validated.

Next Step

With this information, a filter technology that is affordable by rural and urban household
will be developed. Such filter technology will be made to incorporate into pipes and faucets for
water reuse and sanitation.
