Introduction
The purpose of this series of topical Bible studies is to help you lay a foundation for life change that will
last for the rest of your life. Life change is about becoming more and more like Jesus.
Foundations follows the same process Jesus used to train His disciples:
1. Come. Come and get to know God. This is the starting point of life change where we learn who God
is and how to accept Jesus for eternal life.
2. Grow. Grow in your relationship with God. Learn how to grow spiritually through God’s Word, prayer,
and fellowship with other Christians.
3. Serve by giving and caring for others. Learn about your spiritual gifts and abilities and how to give to
and serve God and others.
4. Go and make disciples. Invest in the lives of others and invite them to accept Jesus when they are
ready. Then make disciples by helping others go through the same process.
Pray and ask the Lord for understanding and to change your life to be more like Jesus as you study each
of the chapters.

The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me; his word was on my tongue. 2 Samuel 23:2.
And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard
from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at
work in you who believe. 1 Thessalonians 2:13.
Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own
interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they
were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:20, 21.
I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness,
for you have exalted above all things your name and your word. Psalms 138:2.
Jesus was in the desert for 40 days without eating and then the devil tempted Jesus three times

Him.

As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and
making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that
goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the
purpose for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:10, 11.
For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to
dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12.

Anyone who lives on milk is still a baby. That person does not want to learn about living a godly life.

But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from

Experience Life Change through God’s Word
Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the
mouth of God.'" Matthew 4:4.
• We can’t live on just food
• We need the spiritual food of the Bible
Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For
physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the
present life and the life to come. 1 Timothy 4:7-8.
His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him
who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and
precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the
corruption in the world caused by evil desires. 2 Peter 1:3-4.

Study God’s Word
The Bereans received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to
see if what Paul said was true. Acts 17:11.
• Bible reading gives us an OVERVIEW of God’s Word, but Bible study gives us DETAILED
knowledge of specific truths and helps us develop deeper convictions.
• Bible study is feeding on the MEAT of God’s Word.
We can read through a chapter in the Bible in two to five minutes, but it may take an hour or more to
study the same chapter. Bible study is how we let God be our TEACHER rather than some other person.
God wants to teach us DIRECTLY from His Word. We are responsible to study God’s word for ourselves
instead of just relying on others if we want to GROW spiritually.
• Bible study involves several aspects that help us INTERPRET it correctly so we can APPLY it to
our lives correctly by doing what is it says.
Foundations is a topical Bible study. We study what God says about different topics and we apply it to
our lives in order to experience life change and become more like Jesus.
One helpful idea is to find a verse that would help you in a stressful situation

• It COMFORTS me when I’m sad.
My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life. Psalm 119:50.

• You can cut them out and make memory cards to take with you to help you review.

Meditate on God’s Word
But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree
planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he
does prospers. Psalm 1:2-3.
What is meditation?
Christian meditation is FOCUSED THINKING about God and His Word
• Pray it! Turn the verse into a prayer and say it back to God.
As you mature in Christ, you will have a more balanced input of God’s Word.

Apply God’s Word
The purpose of hearing, reading, studying, memorizing, and meditating on God’s Word is to put it into
practice in your lives. Applying God’s Word to your life is how to experience Life Change. Putting God’s
Word into practice in thought, word, and deed is so important that the entire next chapter is devoted to it.
As you do your part and develop the habit of feeding on God’s Word, which is necessary for spiritual
growth, you must never forget God’s part and live by the Spirit and His power every day.

The reason we hear, read, study, memorize, and meditate on God’s Word is to obey it and experience
Life Change: to become more like Jesus. This is what a disciple of Jesus is doing.
And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in
all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and to
observe the LORD’S commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?
Deuteronomy 10:12 – 13.
If you love me, you will obey what I command. Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the
one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself
to him.” John 14:15, 21.

➢ Both men in this parable hear God’s Word. How was the wise man different than the
foolish man?

Practical Help in Obeying God
Remember from the previous chapters all of the resources God has given you to help you obey Him and
experience Life Change. God has also given you everything you need to resist temptation and avoid sin
and its destructive consequences.
The LORD your God commands you this day to follow these decrees and laws; carefully observe them
with all your heart and with all your soul. Deuteronomy 26:16.
I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.” Psalms 40:8.
But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and
by persevering produce a crop. Luke 8:15.
➢ Can you name some reasons we sometimes don’t have a good attitude about obeying
God?
A lesson on temptation
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and
forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these
stones to become bread.” Matthew 4:1 – 3.
When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does
he tempt anyone; James 1:13.
but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. James 1:14.

Achan replied, “It is true! I have sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel. This is what I have
done: When I saw in the plunder a beautiful robe from Babylonia, two hundred shekels of silver and a

inside my tent, with the silver underneath.” Joshua 7:20 – 21.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on
him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:6.
Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins. James 4:17.
No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be
tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that
you can stand up under it. 1 Corinthians 10:13.

Chapter 4. Make Jesus Lord of Your Life
Just as God did not force you to accept Jesus as Savior, He will not force you to make Jesus Lord of
your life. Jesus is Lord of the universe and He wants to be Lord of your life. It is your choice.
They will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will overcome them because he is Lord of lords and
King of kings—and with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers.” Revelation 17:14.
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at
the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every
tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9-11.

Stop imitating the ideals and opinions of the culture around you, but be inwardly transformed by the Holy
Spirit through a total reformation of how you think. This will empower you to discern God’s will as you live
a beautiful life, satisfying and perfect in his eyes. Romans 12:2. TPT

Once you have decided to make Jesus Lord of your life as well as your Savior, you must give Him control
of every area of your life every day. The following illustration shows some of the areas of your life that
you must give control over to Jesus. If you don’t choose to give Jesus control of your life daily, then these
things will control you.

The seed that fell among the thorns represents others who hear God’s word, but all too quickly the

Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? Luke 6:46.
Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross
daily and follow me.” Luke 9:23.
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1.
Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith
and gave glory to God being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.

Here are some wrong things you can put your faith in:
Don't put your trust in human leaders; no human being can save you. Psalms 146:3.

He who trusts in himself is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom is kept safe. Proverbs 28:26.
The Lord says, “Wise people should not boast that they are wise. Powerful people should not boast that
they are powerful. Rich people should not boast that they are rich. Jeremiah 9:23.
Luke 17:6. He replied, If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree,
‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.

Chapter 5. Know God’s Will
God promises to guide you and let you know His will. All you have to do is to trust Him and seek His will.
God is good, He loves you, and as your perfect Heavenly Father, He knows what is best for you.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways
acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5 - 6
God’s Will
Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Ephesians 5:17.
➢ Why do parents want their children to know and obey their will?
➢ Why does God want you to know and obey His will?
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.

It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality
1 Thessalonians 4:3 (Being sanctified is the process of becoming like Jesus)
Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18.

Great Commandment
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. This is the first and most important
commandment. The second most important commandment is like this one. And it is, “Love others as
much as you love yourself.” Matthew 22:37 – 39. CEV

But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do. 1 Peter 1:15.
• To be holy is to be totally pure and righteous. We became holy to God when we accepted Jesus
for the forgiveness of all our past, present, and future sins.
• To “be holy in all you do” is growing to be more like Jesus by putting God’s Word into practice in
our lives and asking for forgiveness when we sin.
➢ What are some areas in which you need to grow to be more like Jesus?
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and
forever! Amen. 2 Peter 3:18.
• Grace is receiving what you don’t deserve. God gives us grace by forgiving our sins when we
don’t deserve it.
• We grow in grace by asking God for forgiveness when we sin and remembering that God gives
us grace and removes our guilt.
➢ What is an area of your life in which you need to receive God’s grace and forgiveness?
➢ What do you need to do to grow in your relationship with Jesus and know Him better?
You can determine God’s will by asking yourself questions based on God’s Word. The following
questions are based on the verses above.
• Am I putting what God wants for me ahead of what I want?
• Will it help me love God and others more?
• Will it help or hinder me from helping others find the Lord?
• Is it something Jesus would do?
• Will it help me be more like Jesus?

Develop questions from the following verses to help you know God’s will.
Everything is permissible for me”—but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me”—
but I will not be mastered by anything. 1 Corinthians 6:12.

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received
from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

The law of his God is in his heart; his feet do not slip. Psalms 37:31.
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I
should go, for to you I lift up my soul. Psalms 143:8.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and
pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this
world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what
God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:1 – 2.

Other factors that can help you know God’s will for your life
Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which
God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Romans 13:1.

because the days are evil. 17Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.

Chapter 6. Talking with God
Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Romans 12:12.
Prayer is simply talking with God out loud or silently in your head.
Communication is essential for any relationship including your relationship with God. You were created to
have a relationship with God, so your communication with Him is very important.
Prayer is not about saying the right words the right way to get God to do what you want Him to do. God is
not a cosmic genie and prayer is not a way of “rubbing the lamp” to get God to come forth and give us
what we want.
Psalms 62:8. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.
Benefits of Prayer
‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’
Jeremiah 33:3.
Because God is God there are many things that we will not know or understand. We find encouragement
in the truth that God knows, and He may choose to reveal whatever He desires.
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that
is at work within us, Ephesians 3:20.

God teaches us how to be free from anxiety and experience His peace in Philippians 4:6-9.

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he
hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of

How to Pray
Take time to look at how Jesus modeled prayer for us in Matthew 6:9-13. There are no set formulas or
special words for how to pray, but a good way of praying includes these four elements of prayer.
Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that
confess his name. Hebrews 13:15.
As you read your Bible, make a list of God's character qualities (attributes) that you discover and then
review them when you pray.
Praise God right now. Which of the following attributes of God are the most meaningful to you?

Confession

All of your sins (past, present, and future) as a Christian were forgiven when you received Jesus for
forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Sin causes damage to any relationship. Your sins as a Christian do
not make you lose your position as God’s child but your sins do damage your relationship with God.
Confession repairs your damaged relationship with God and allows you to put Him back in control of your
life where He belongs.
Thanksgiving

Look for the good in life, thank God for it, and you will be a more positive person. Make a list of all that

I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone.
1 Timothy 2:1.
o Make a prayer list of people you want to pray for. You might pray for different people on different
days of the week.

Ephesians 1:15-19, Colossians 1:3-12, 1 Thessalonians 1:2-3, 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12

And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19.
You do not have, because you do not ask God. James 4:2.
Believers face a spiritual battle every day. Satan wants to defeat you through temptation and fear. By
praying for protection, you will have the confidence to face every situation during the day.
The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 1 John 4:4.

Praying for yourself and others is a way to give up control of things that you cannot control and giving
control to God.
Quiet Time
In order for your love relationship with God to grow, you should have a regular quiet time to be alone with
God to get to know and experience Him through Bible reading and prayer. A quiet time is not just Bible
reading to gain an overview of the Bible or a Bible study to gain in-depth knowledge of the Bible. Also, a
quiet time is not just prayer to communicate your thoughts and feelings to God. We set aside time for any
relationship that matters.

Your time alone with God should be the top priority in your schedule for five reasons:
"Look! I've been standing at the door and constantly knocking. If anyone ... opens the door, I will
come in and fellowship with him and he with me.” Revelation 3:20.

Let us not get tired of doing what is right, for after a while we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't
get discouraged and give up. Galatians 6:9.

Chapter 7. Biblical Fellowship
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is
what we are! 1 John 3:1.
• Since God is our heavenly Father and all believers are His children, other Christians are my
brothers and sisters.
For where two or three come together in my name, there am I (Jesus) with them. Matthew 18:20.
Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2.
Pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.
James 5:16.

All believers are forgiven sinners yet we still sin. None of us is perfect.
Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something
against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up
meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more
as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:24-25.
Let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Galatians 6:10.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as
you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16.
