Remember:
A variable, commonly a letter in the English alphabet, represents a number or quantity.
Ex: “x“ and “y“ are variables in the expression 4𝑥 2 + 3𝑦 − 10
A constant is a number with a value that is always the same.
Ex: “−𝟏𝟎” is a constant in the expression 4𝑥 2 + 3𝑦 − 10
An exponent is a number or letter written at the upper right side of a mathematical expression called
the base.
Ex: “𝟐” and “𝟏” are exponents in the expression 4𝑥 2 + 3𝑦 − 10
A numerical coefficient is defined as a fixed number that is multiplied to a variable(s).
Ex: “𝟒” and “𝟑” are numerical coefficients in the expression 4𝑥 2 + 3𝑦 − 10
I. Identify the variable, the constant, the exponent, and the numerical coefficient of the following
expressions by completing the table below.
Remember:
A polynomial is a type of algebraic expression in which the exponents of all variables should be a
whole number. The exponents of the variables in any polynomial must be a non-negative
integer. A polynomial comprises constants and variables, but we cannot perform division
operations by a variable in polynomials.
𝑎
Example of polynomials: 3𝑚𝑛2 , 6𝑥𝑦 3 , , 10 − 𝑟, −5𝑎𝑏 3 + 𝑎𝑏 2 − 9.9
3
1
3 10 −5𝑎𝑏3 −9.9
Example of not polynomials: 3𝑚𝑛2, 6𝑥𝑦 −3 , , ,
𝑎 −𝑟 𝑎𝑏2
A term could be a constant, a variable, or the product of these two. Terms are separated by the plus
or minus sign.
A monomial is a type of polynomial with a single term. Ex: 3𝑚𝑛2 , −5, 𝑥
A binomial is a type of polynomial that has two terms. Ex: 10 − 𝑟 2𝑥 + 3
A trinomial is a type of polynomial that has three terms. Ex: −5𝑎𝑏 + 𝑎𝑏 2 − 9.9,
3
𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 − 2
The degree of a term with one variable is the exponent of the variable.
The degree of a term with multiple variables is the sum of the exponents of the variables.
The degree of a polynomial is the highest degree among the terms.
II. Determine the number of terms, type, and the degree of the given polynomial.
Remember:
To evaluate an algebraic expression:
✓ substitute the given value of each variable; and
✓ simplify the resulting numerical expression by applying rules on the operation on integers.
Example:
1) Find the value of 2n – 7 if 𝑛 = 4. 2) What is the value of −𝑎3 if 𝑎 = 5?
Solution: 2n – 7 = 2(4) – 7 Solution: −𝑎3 = −(5)3
=8−7 = −(125)
=1 = −125
3) Evaluate 5𝑥 2 − 3𝑦 + 2 if 𝑥 = 4 and 𝑦 = −1. 4) What value of “x” makes 2𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 = 33 true?
Solution: 5𝑥 2 − 3𝑦 + 2 = 5(𝟒)2 − 3(−𝟏) + 2 Solution: 2𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 = 33
= 5(16) − (−3) + 2 2(3)2 + 5(3) = 33
= 80 + 3 + 2 2(9) + 15 = 33
= 85 18 + 15 = 33
33 = 33
The value of x is 3 to make 2𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 = 33 true.
I. Solve the following problems. Show your step-by-step solution. No solution means wrong.
1) Find the value of 2y 3 – 3y – 5 if 𝑦 = 2 ____________________
2) What value of “y” makes 2y 3 – 3y – 5 = 40 true? ____________________
3) What is the value of 5𝑧 2 if 𝑧 = 3? ____________________
4) Evaluate 𝑥2 – 2𝑦 + 𝑧 if 𝑥 = 5 and 𝑦 = 0, and 𝑧 = −2. ____________________
5) Evaluate mn + p given that 𝑚 = 6, 𝑛 = 7, and 𝑝 = −3. ____________________
6) Evaluate 2m + 3n − p given that 𝑚 = 6, 𝑛 = 7, and 𝑝 = −3. ____________________
7) Evaluate 5p + (n − m) given that 𝑚 = 6, 𝑛 = 7, and 𝑝 = −3. ____________________
