Thanksgiving is an annual national holiday celebrated on
the 4th Thursday of november in the United States. But in
Canada, it is in the 2nd monday of november.
- History:
In the XVI century, in Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts, the
villagers held a feast to celebrate that year's food harvest
because they had experienced very harsh winters.
It was from 1620 onwards that the pilgrims who
founded the village began to celebrate the good harvest.
In 1621, in order to repeat gratitude for the harvests,
the village governor organized the “Feast in Autumn” among
the English colonists and Native Americans. This event
consisted of varied dishes with corn, fish, ducks and turkeys.
- Traditions and customs:
Family members who live in other cities often
go to their parents' or grandparents' houses
to celebrate, give thanks and spend time
together. And families get together at lunch
or dinner time to celebrate the date with a
feast. Some families say prayers as thanks.
- Thanksgiving food:
The main Thanksgiving foods are: Turkey,
pumpkin, corn, cranberries, potatoes, apples
and nuts.
- Clothes:
At Thanksgiving, everyday clothes are worn,
usually warmer clothes.
- Curiosities:
- On Thanksgiving Day, in New York, there is a
parade in which Santa Claus appears
announcing the beginning of the Christmas
season in the country.
- Since 1920, the National Football League
(NFL), the national American football league,
has played games on Thanksgiving Day. Many
families take advantage of the holiday to watch
the match together.
- Black Friday occurs the following Friday after
Thanksgiving. The date is a day when retailers
in the United States carry out promotions to
attract buyers and clear stocks before starting
Christmas sales.
