Chosen Legal Case: Facebook-Cambridge Analytica Data Breach

Summary:

The Facebook-Cambridge Analytica scandal happened when Cambridge Analytica, a

political consulting firm, collected personal data from millions of Facebook users without
their permission. In 2014, through a third-party app, Cambridge Analytica accessed
information from users and their friends. This data was then used to affect political
campaigns, especially the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election. Facebook was criticized for not
protecting user privacy and allowing this data misuse. As a result, Facebook faced
lawsuits, investigations, and public outrage. This case raised serious concerns about how
companies handle personal data and the importance of getting users’ consent.

1. Was the cause of the case valid in terms of presented proof and argument?

Yes, the case was valid because there was enough evidence. It was proven that Cambridge
Analytica took users' data without permission, and Facebook did not tell users what would
happen to their data. This broke Facebook’s own rules about privacy. Investigations,
documents, and testimonies showed that the claims were true, making the case valid.

2. Was the result of the case reasonable based on fairness and logic?

Yes, the result was fair and logical. Facebook was fined $5 billion by the Federal Trade
Commission (FTC) for breaking privacy rules, and the company had to make stronger data
protection rules. Although some people felt the fine was not enough, it was a fair response
that held Facebook accountable and encouraged other companies to protect users' data
better.

3. How would you apply the pointers to avoid legal problems in this case?

To avoid similar issues, companies should make sure users know exactly how their data
will be used and get clear consent. Regularly checking how data is handled and making
sure third-party partners follow privacy rules is important. Companies should also follow
privacy laws like GDPR and train employees on how to protect user data to prevent legal
issues.
