Lesson Plan: Algebraic Expansion and Factorisation (KS3)

Duration: 60 minutes

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

1. Understand how to expand a pair of brackets in the form (𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏)(𝑐𝑥 + 𝑑).
2. Factorise expressions by taking out common factors.
3. Factorise quadratic expressions of the form 𝑎𝑥 ! + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 where 𝑎 = 1.

Materials Needed:

• Whiteboard and markers

• Worksheets for practice problems – corbettmaths.com
• Online tools (optional) – transum.org

Lesson Structure:

Introduction (5 minutes):

• Briefly review previous knowledge related to algebraic expressions and terms.

Direct Instruction (20 minutes):

1. Algebraic Expansion (10 minutes):

• Write the expression (𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏)(𝑐𝑥 + 𝑑) on the board.

• Explain the distributive property (FOIL method: First, Outer, Inner, Last) to expand
the brackets.
• Show step-by-step how to expand: (𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏)(𝑐𝑥 + 𝑑) = 𝑎𝑐𝑥 ! + 𝑎𝑑𝑥 + 𝑏𝑐𝑥 + 𝑏𝑑
• Combine like terms if applicable.

2. Factorisation (10 minutes):

• Introduce the concept of factorisation, explaining that it is the reverse process of

expansion.
• Show how to factorise by taking out common factors. For example, for 6𝑥 ! + 9𝑥:
o Identify the common factor (3x) and factor it out: 3𝑥(2𝑥 + 3)
• Discuss how to factorise quadratic expressions of the form 𝑎𝑥 ! + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 using group
factorisation method. For example, factorise 𝑥 ! + 5𝑥 + 6 into (𝑥 + 2)(𝑥 + 3).

Guided Practice (15 minutes):

• Algebraic Expansion: Provide students with several expressions to expand in pairs,

such as:
o (2𝑥 + 3)(𝑥 + 4)
o (3𝑥 + 2)(2𝑥 + 5)
• Factorisation: Next, give students quadratic expressions to factorise, such as:
o 𝑥 ! + 7𝑥 + 10
o 2𝑥 ! + 8𝑥 (common factor)
• Circulate the room to provide support and answer questions.

Independent Practice (15 minutes)

• Project a worksheet on the screen that includes a mix of problems requiring students
to both expand and factorise expressions.

Example problems:

1. Expand (𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 + 3)

2. Factorise 𝑥 ! + 4𝑥 + 4.

3. Expand (3𝑥 + 2)(2𝑥 + 5)

4. Factorise 4𝑥 ! + 8𝑥.

Closure (5 minutes)

• Review key points from the lesson.

• Ask students to share one thing they learned about expansion or factorisation.
• Encourage them to practice these skills at home and remind them of the importance of
these concepts in higher-level mathematics.
