I. Introduction

The DLSU-D Grandstand Parking Lot is an area that experiences litter and debris

buildup due to its frequent use by the students and staff. These areas accommodate

various events and vehicles, and store waste brought on the way to the areas by the

community. This project proposes a cleanup drive to restore these parts of the campus,

opting for a cleaner and safer place for the Lasallian community. The clean-up drive is

composed of students to promote removing waste, proper waste segregation, cleaning

surfaces, and maintenance in the long term. Additionally, cleanup drives also encourage

individuals to adopt sustainable practices by raising awareness of environmental

problems. Cleaner areas are more attractive for both students and tourists visiting our

university, as well as improve public health by lowering waste-related risks. Students

receive insightful instruction on how to care for our environment, which empowers them

to advocate further improvements. Creation and execution of waste segregation boxes

and signage will be installed to support long-term cleanliness.

II. Problem

● Small pieces of litter scattered around the Grandstand parking lot in

DLSU-D

○ The amount of small litter seen on the ground of the Grandstand is

increasing (e.g., candy and contraceptive wrappers, bottle caps, plastics,

nails, etc.) It affects car owners as they can damage their tires and

vehicles if litter enters the engine. Additionally, it may clog the

Grandstand's drainage systems if small pieces of trash block them.

○ Blocking the drainage system may result in flooding, making muddy

pathways, which could lead to attracting pests such as mosquitoes and

sinking vehicle tires.

● People's undisciplined actions in disposing of trash during events at

DLSU-D Grandstand

○ People who attend the university’s events/activities should be thoughtful

and responsible with their trash. Although the housekeepers’ job is to

clean every place in DLSU-D, people's undisciplined actions in disposing

of their garbage affect their work. It is challenging for them to clean every

spot of the Grandstand since it is an open and busy place on campus.

G-ENGL302 Technical Writing

○ As Lasallians, our school is known for its campaign to promote an

eco-friendly environment and prioritize the health of its students. Our

actions reflect the reputation of our university, and we carry its pride, which

should not be tarnished due to improper waste disposal.

● Improper waste disposal management.

○ Non-biodegradable waste must be segregated from biodegradable ones.

Failure to do so can contaminate recyclable waste and may harm those

responsible for waste segregation within the DLSU-D campus.

○ Besides separating waste that would greatly help campus workers and

landfill staff, practicing the CLAY-GO (Clean As You Go) policy is a good

habit for students that can be carried over even outside the campus.

III. Objectives

● Promote Environmental Awareness and Responsibility

Strengthen the environmental consciousness within the DLSU-D community by

highlighting the importance of maintaining cleanliness, even in parking areas, as

part of the university’s commitment to sustainability.

● Establish Efficient Waste Management

Introduce a comprehensive waste segregation system by strategically placing

2–3 sets of clearly labeled trash bins (for biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and

recyclable materials) around the Grandstand parking lot, ensuring accessibility

and ease of use.

● Improve Parking Lot Cleanliness

Achieve a 20% improvement in overall cleanliness of the Grandstand parking lot

within one month by conducting regular cleanliness assessments and gathering

feedback from the community.

● Create a Welcoming and Productive Environment

Enhance the Grandstand area by maintaining a clean and organized space,

fostering a pleasant atmosphere for students, staff, and visitors to work, relax, or

attend events.
G-ENGL302 Technical Writing
Project Proposal Title Defense

Success of the Clean-up Drive

It will be measured by the consistent adherence to cleanliness protocols, such as

the CLAY-GO policy, observed during regular inspections and events. Along with an

increased community participation in proper waste disposal and positive feedback from

users of the area.

IV. Solution/Features

● Because litter is still being detected around the DLSU-D grandstand parking

area, the researchers will propose to conduct a general clean-up drive:

○ The operation will solely focus on the gathering of litter only within the

premises of the Grandstand parking area.

○ The project will feature waste segregation of any kind of litter found in the

area.

○ Promotion will be implemented via awareness campaign posters.

○ It will benefit the users of those parking spaces by allowing a more

decontaminated area and preventing the effects of poor waste

management that may endanger them such as potential flooding and

mosquito attraction.
G-ENGL302 Technical Writing
Project Proposal Title Defense

● Numerous problems of waste pollution within the campus will be solved;

○ Implementing an example of proper waste management by following the

CLAYGO rule within the campus will promote accountability for their trash

and overall cleanliness while preventing the undisciplinary actions of

students and staff.

○ The clean-up drive will solve the prevention of potential damage to the

vehicles parked within the area.

○ As the parking spaces are comprised of natural greenery, the garbage,

even the small pieces of litter, could potentially disrupt the development of

the plants surrounding and within the area.

Although the project's scope is only limited to one parking area, its impact will be a

catalyst for potential future clean-up initiatives for other parking spaces inside the

campus

V. Method

Our team will be executing this project through the use of sustainable strategies,

focusing on the use of eco-friendly materials, maintenance plans, and a comprehensive

waste segregation system.

To achieve the project’s objectives, the key strategy to be utilized is the division

of labor and concrete work plan. The team has the following project plan to

accomplish that.

Our project will begin by seeking approval from the University Administration.

Upon approval, we will ask for collaboration with the Campus Sustainability Office and

Facilities Maintenance Office, the lead offices tasked with implementation and

monitoring of DLSU-D’s sustainability and campus maintenance programs. Next, our

team will obtain essential cleaning tools (brooms, trash bags, gloves, dustpans, face

masks) and create clear labels for the waste segregation boxes. The labels will be

created using the preferred graphics software.

A Facebook page will be created to promote the team’s objectives and, our

chosen SDG, and promotional content related to the Clean-up drive. We intend to use

social media to share updates about the project and raise awareness about our

advocacy.
G-ENGL302 Technical Writing
Project Proposal Title Defense

During the clean-up phase, our team will conduct an inspection of the

Grandstand Parking Lot to discern high-priority cleaning zones, and divide the labor

according to the inspection. Color-coded waste segregation boxes and signage will be

installed to encourage long-term waste management among the Lasallian community.

Laminated posters or permanent signs with simple, clear instructions on waste disposal.

As proof of completion, the team will compile and accomplish the progress report

required for the final assignment in Technical Writing.

VI. Resources

In preparation for the cleanup drive, the following equipment that are essential to

ensure an efficient and safe process are:

● Brooms: Essential for sweeping up debris and litter from various surfaces.

● Dustpans: Used with the brooms to collect materials for disposal.

● Trash Bags: Necessary for collecting and disposing of waste materials gathered

during the cleanup.

● Gloves: Important for protecting the hands from dirt, and germs.

● Face Masks: Recommended to ensure safety and to minimize inhaling of dust

during the cleaning process.

G-ENGL302 Technical Writing

These resources will be personally provided by the group, combining used and

available personal household cleaning materials.

Additionally, the group will implement a system that includes two bins placed at

three designated areas. This approach is designed to optimize waste collection and

organization, making the process more effective.

We, the members of the team along with our dedicated volunteers, are

committed to participate in the cleanup of the grandstand parking lot area. Together, We

will coordinate our efforts to ensure an efficient and effective cleanup process.

We, the Team 1, are well-suited for this project as we are committed advocates of

several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) relevant to its objectives:

● SDG 13: Underscores the importance of combating climate change and its

impacts through actions such as waste management and pollution reduction.

● SDG 15: Focuses on conserving terrestrial ecosystems, preventing degradation,

and promoting biodiversity, which aligns with the clean-up drive's goal of reducing

litter and preserving natural habitats.

● SDG 11: Emphasizes the creation and maintenance of clean, safe, and

sustainable community spaces.

Our team has the experience and capability to execute this initiative, drawing

from past engagements in our NSTP course, where we organized a child health and

development advocacy program. This initiative supported children's physical, emotional,

and social well-being, addressing the lack of opportunities for physical and mental

activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. It included diverse activities that fostered

growth, creativity, cultural understanding, and community engagement.

G-ENGL302 Technical Writing

Some of our members are student leaders actively involved in events and

partnerships with the university’s Community Development Center, conducting activities

that benefit various sectors. Additionally, through other academic courses, we have

promoted environmental and youth-centered initiatives, such as publishing educational

infographics. Beyond academic requirements, we embrace the responsibility to care for

our planet and contribute to a sustainable future for the next generation.

IX. Management Plan

We will track our progress by breaking the project into clear phases, such as

Pre-Cleaning, Cleaning, and Post-Cleaning. Each phase will have specific tasks with

deadlines to keep everything on schedule.

To stay organized, we’ll use tools like Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets to

monitor tasks and progress. By keeping things simple and checking in regularly, we can

follow the timeline and complete the project successfully.

As evaluation and assessment of the project, we will prepare a report

documenting the cleanup process, before-and-after photos of the area, and its

maintenance to assess the impact of our efforts and provide insights for the eventual

development of the project.
