Statistics: Mean, Median, and Mode

Statistics is the study of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data. Mean, median, and mode are

measures of central tendency that describe the center of a data set.

### Key Concepts:

- **Mean**: The average of a set of numbers. Calculate by dividing the sum of all numbers by the

total count.

Formula: Mean = (Sum of all values) / (Number of values)

- **Median**: The middle value in a sorted list of numbers. If the list has an even number of values,

the median is the average of the two middle values.

- **Mode**: The most frequently occurring value in a data set. A data set may have one mode, more

than one mode, or no mode.

### Solved Examples:

1. Find the mean of the numbers: 4, 8, 6, 10, 12:

Sum = 4 + 8 + 6 + 10 + 12 = 40

Count = 5

Mean = 40 / 5 = 8

2. Determine the median of the numbers: 3, 7, 8, 5, 9:

Arrange in ascending order: 3, 5, 7, 8, 9

Median = 7 (middle value)

3. Find the mode of the numbers: 2, 4, 4, 6, 8, 8, 8, 10:

Mode = 8 (appears most frequently)

4. Calculate the mean, median, and mode for the data set: 1, 2, 2, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5:

Mean = (1 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 5) / 8 = 25 / 8 = 3.125

Median = Average of 4th and 5th values = (3 + 4) / 2 = 3.5

Mode = 4 (most frequent)

### Real-World Applications:

- Mean, median, and mode are used in economics to analyze income distribution.

- They are applied in sports to evaluate player performance statistics.

- In education, they help interpret test scores and student performance.

### Practice Problems:

1. Find the mean of the numbers: 12, 15, 10, 18, 20.

Solution: Mean = (12 + 15 + 10 + 18 + 20) / 5 = 75 / 5 = 15.

2. Determine the median of the numbers: 5, 8, 12, 14, 10.

Solution: Arrange in order: 5, 8, 10, 12, 14; Median = 10.

3. Find the mode of the numbers: 3, 6, 6, 9, 12, 12, 12, 15.

Solution: Mode = 12.

4. A data set contains the numbers: 7, 8, 8, 9, 10, 10, 10, 11. Calculate the mean, median, and

mode.

Solution:

Mean = (7 + 8 + 8 + 9 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 11) / 8 = 73 / 8 = 9.125.

Median = Average of 4th and 5th values = (9 + 10) / 2 = 9.5.

Mode = 10 (most frequent).

5. If a data set has the numbers: 5, 7, 9, 9, 11, 13, 15, 15, find the mean, median, and mode.

Solution:

Mean = (5 + 7 + 9 + 9 + 11 + 13 + 15 + 15) / 8 = 84 / 8 = 10.5.

Median = Average of 4th and 5th values = (9 + 11) / 2 = 10.

Mode = 9 and 15 (bimodal).
