During the colonial period in Latin America, the economy was primarily structured around the
exploitation of natural resources. Examples:

1. *Mining*:

- The extraction of precious metals, especially silver and gold,

2. *Agriculture and Livestock*:

- *Haciendas* and *plantations* became the main modes of agricultural production

3.Trade*:

- A distinctive feature was the *trade monopoly*, where the colonies could only trade with
the metropolis.

4.*Slavery*:

The arrival of African slaves was crucial for the functioning of the colonial economies

Taxation in Latin America during the colonial era was complex and multifaceted, designed to
maximize revenue for the Spanish crown at the expense of the local population and the
natural resources of the colonies. Examples :

Indigenous tribute: The indigenous people were forced to pay tribute to the Spanish Crown.

Alcabala: A tax on sales and commercial transactions.

Quinto Real: This was a 20% tax on precious metals (mainly gold and silver) mined in the
colonies.

Customs revenue: Taxes on the import and export of goods

Peninsulares:Dominated the colonial economy and held monopolies on the most lucrative
Businesses

Creoles: Owned large estates and active in local and regional trade, but often excluded from
the peninsulares

Mestizos: Could own small plots of land or businesses, generally on a smaller scale.

Mulatos and free black: Hada very limited access to land

Indians: Only Participated in the economy mainly through subsistence farming

Slaves: They had no access to anything and were forced to work
