CHALKBOARD

Definition: chalkboard is a hard or rigid surface made of a smooth usually


dark substance, used for writing or drawing on with chalkboard, especially in
teaching

Types:
 Traditional chalkboard
 Green chalkboard
 Magnetic chalkboard
 Glass chalkboard
 Roll-up chalkboard
 A-frame chalkboard
Use of chalkboard:
 The lesson can be summarized in the right manner with the the help of
chalkboard.
 Lesson can be illustrated in the chalkboard with the help of drawing sketches
and visual symbols.
 It allows for spontaneity in the classroom.
 If students are confused about something point can illustrated in the
chalkboard.
 When students cannot visualize an object it can be quickly sketched.
 Chalkboards are especially useful in working out the mathematical problems.

Guidelines for the effective use of chalkboard:


 Plan the use of chalkboard and everything needed for the use should be kept
ready before class begins.
 Chalkboard should be well lit.
 Clean the chalkboard completely before starting a class.
 Write on the board according to a pre-decided Plan.
 Decide to write less and mean more.
 Never use abbreviations which is not standard.
 Diagrams and pictures can be sketched before class.
 Do not speak to the chalkboard.
 Plan your rubbing off sequence.
 It should be ensured that board is serviced periodically.
Merits of chalkboard:
 It is simple to use with little practice.
 Electricity is not a must for using the chalkboard.
 It is economic and reusable.
 It can be put to wide and varied uses.
 Sequential development of the content can be done effectively.
 Pupils interested in classwork can be stimulated.
 Allows note taking.
 Mistakes can be corrected instantly.
Demerits of chalkboard:
 It cannot be used with large groups.
 Material cannot be saved until the next class.
 Teacher loses eye contact and breaks or interrupt communication while
writing on the board.
 Cannot illustrate moving parts.
 Is not useful for a teacher who has poor handwriting
