Let’s Talk, Read, and Write

Session 5: Keep Learning!

What is Morphology?
• Morphology is a study of words, word parts, and their meanings.
• A word is made up of a base or a root that tells the meaning (e.g., paint)
o We can add small word parts called suffixes to the end of a base word (e.g., ‘-ing’, ‘-ed’, ‘-s’, ‘-
er’) to make new words.
▪ The suffixes have meaning or a purpose.
• When we add ‘-ing’ or ‘-ed’ to a word it can tells us about when the action is
happening (e.g., I am painting right now versus I painted yesterday.)
o We can also add small word parts called prefixes to the beginning of a base word (e.g., re-).
▪ The prefixes have meaning too. (e.g., ‘re-‘ means again). So when we add ‘re-‘ to the
word ‘paint’ and make ‘repaint’, the word’s meaning changes to mean that we will paint
again.
• Paying attention to the beginnings (prefixes) and endings (suffixes) of words helps to grow our word
knowledge, understanding, spelling, and reading and writing. Consider the many different words we
can build and write when we add prefixes and suffixes to the base word ‘joy’. (e.g., enjoy, enjoying,
enjoyable, joyful, joyfully…). Help your child take note of word beginnings and endings as you read and
write together.

Take Note of Interesting Words

• English has many synonyms. Synonyms are words that mean the same thing or are close in meaning.
For example, the words enormous, huge, large, and gigantic all mean big. Knowing different kinds of
ways to say the same words in different ways helps us understand what we read and also makes us
better writers. We can replace simple or overused words with words that are more interesting as in
the following example.

• What can you do at home to grow your child’s word skills?

o Listen to the words you and your family use at home.
o Are there some words that you use all the time?
o Is there another word that is slightly different or more interesting that could replace the overused
word?
o Try using the newer word during the week and encourage the rest of your family to do the same.
