Belt Change Checklist

Preparation

Allow engine to cool down to ambient temperature.
Determine change intervals for belts and other drive components
(tensioning pulley/idlers, water pump, vibration damper, overrunning alternator pulley etc.).
Note: In event of chip tuning or similar modifications it may be necessary to select shorter change intervals.

If change interval has not been reached or is not specified, carry out following checks:
Visual inspection of belt: belt profile wear, edge wear, damage to belt reverse, cracks/breakouts
Check belt tension (tension check in SEEM or Hz / pointer position).
Ancillary drive: Check alignment of all belt pulleys and rollers in drive (angular offset, axial offset) using ContiTech LASER TOOL.
Inspect all moving parts of belt drive (especially contact surfaces) for wear and damage.
Check whether tensioning pulley and idlers run freely and check bearing play in all rotating components.
Check belt drive for soiling and foreign bodies. Inspect for leaks at camshaft, crankshaft, water pump etc.
Ancillary drive: If appropriate, check function of overrunning alternator pulley.
Ancillary drive: If appropriate, check torsional vibration damper (crankshaft pulley) for damage, wear and cracks.

Determine ContiTech part numbers of parts to be changed using catalog systems (e.g. www.contitech.de/aamcat or TecDoc).
Have appropriate fitting instructions to hand (see www.contitech.de/pic or scan QR code on packaging).
Check whether technical information on frequent fitting errors is available (see www.contitech.de/pic or scan QR code on packaging).
Check that you have all bolts that have to be changed according to fitting instructions.
Have all special tools specified as required in fitting instructions to hand.
Check age of belt (label on packaging or belt markings). Belts >5 years old must not be fitted.
Carry out careful visual inspection of new parts immediately before fitting them (timing belt must not be kinked!).

Replacement / fitting

Compare removed parts with new ones. In event of major differences, check that you have correct parts (www.contitech.de/pic).
Fit and tension belt exactly in accordance with manufacturer’s specification. It is essential to observe rotational direction
of tensioning pulley when tensioning.
Adhere strictly to tightening torques for fastenings. Incorrect torques can result in later failure.
Avoid interruptions during fitting process, if possible. If interruptions occur nevertheless, check that all parts have
been changed as planned.
Important: Engine must be turned over several times as specified in fitting instructions before carrying out final tension check.

After changing belt

Fill out ContiTech belt change sticker so that it is clearly legible and stick it in engine compartment.
Carry out test drive.
