ME115: Tutorial # 7

(Q1 due before tutorial)

1.

2.

3.
(a) Estimate the apparent fracture toughness of the three point bend specimen, if the
sample had a dimension of 10 x 10 mm, and the loading points on the bottom were 40
mm apart. The effective notch plus crack length was 2 mm, and the failure load was
1200 N. (b) Is the Kc estimate valid for this sample?

(See lectures notes for fracture toughness specimen equations)

4.
If we are using the steel below for a mounting bracket that has a 0.25” hole as shown. The steel
has a toughness behaviour as shown with plate width of 2”. The tensile load direction is shown
by the arrows. Calculate the maximum load in lb-f causing fracture if the plate thickness
increases from 0.25” to 0.5”.
5.
Using arrows, label 2 ductile and 2 brittle fracture surfaces in the following scanning
electron micrograph.
