BULLETIN
NUMBER 1
Service bulletin for the following models: TBR-1M, TBR-1SL, TBR-2M, TBR-2SL, TBR-3,
TBR-5, M60, M100, S120.
Serial numbers: All TBR, M, and S models built since January 1987.
Problem: Switchcraft model PC-12A jacks don’t switch correctly or are intermittent.
Symptoms: Input jacks crackle or hum. Effects Loop jacks may not pass signal from Send to Return
when nothing is plugged in; when jacks are plugged in, sound may be intermittent or static or no
sound may be present (if an instrument cord is plugged in from the Send to the Return and the
problem is remedied, the jacks probably require servicing).
Necessary parts: Cramolin® or similar cleaner for most servicing; replacement jacks in extreme cases
Labor involved: Removing chassis from housing, cleaning jacks with Cramolin®, inspecting and test-
ing contacts, replacing deformed or heavily corroded jacks.
Warning! Chassis should only be serviced by qualified personnel. Dangerous high voltages
are inside the chassis. Power should be turned off and filter capacitors discharged before ser-
vicing any parts.
Background: Some Switchcraft model PC-12A phone jacks were improperly plated, allowing corro-
sion to form on the switch contact and tip area. This creates intermittent switching or poor connec-
tion. In addition, overtightened jacks can be deformed, making switching connections unreliable.
This chart shows which models are affected, and which jacks in each model should be inspected and
treated, if necessary:
Insert a plug into the jack. A standard Switchcraft diamond-shaped phone plug, model #270, or
equivalent, should be used. (“Military”-type plugs with large, ball-shaped tips should not be used, as
they will definitely cause the tip and switch contacts to deform.) There must be some insertion trav-
el after the plug tip comes into contact with the jack’s tip surface before the switch contact opens.
If switching is intermittent or if jack causes crackling or fails to pass signal, inspect for deformation.
If the contacts appear distorted, the switch contact is out of alignment, or the contacts appear heavi-

Remedying Switchcraft PC-12A Phone Jack Problems
ly corroded, replace the jack with part number 125-002. Minimize jack rotation and make sure that
you do not over-tighten the nut when securing the jack. Overtightening may deform the jack and its
contacts.
If the jack appears physically sound, apply an electronics cleaning fluid (Cramolin Fluid or Deox-It
by Caig Chemicals, or Miller-Stephens Contact Re-Nu and Lubrication Base). Whether you employ
an aerosol or liquid, remove all excess after application, using a cotton swab or clean, absorbent
cloth.
As an alternative to contact-cleaning fluid, a burnishing tool with an extra-fine abrasive surface may
be used. It must be specifically made for audio dry-circuit contacts usage. Never use ordinary sand-
paper. Never use steel wool inside of an amplifier, as the “dust,” or “hair” left behind is conductive
and may cause short-circuits inside the amplifier. Caution: The plating on the jack contacts is
extremely thin, and if it is removed, substantial corrosion will form.
After cleaning or replacing jacks, visually inspect and test the amp once more. Place the chassis back
into the enclosure, making sure that jacks are not distorted.
