Torque Converter/Transmission Fluid and Axle Oil

Important
1. EJC 61 and EJC 65 use hydraulic oil in hydrostatic transmission. See “Hydraulic Oil”.
2. The following guidelines from Spicer-Off-Highway Products Technical Service Bulletin
USA 287E Rev. 07/01 should be used in place of all other published lubricant guidelines for
transmissions, torque converters, and axles.
Torque Converter/Transmission Fluid (USA 287E Rev. 07/01)
Specification
1. Spicer - Off-Highway Products recommends the use of SAE 40 or SAE 50 lubricant that
meets CAT TO-4 requirements. In cases where vehicles must be cold-started in ambient
temperatures below 5° C, vehicle warm-up procedures must be followed before moving
vehicle or damage to the drive train components may occur.
CAUTION: Where ambient temperature variations do not allow the use of high viscosity lubricants
in transmissions, follow lubricant recommendations from Spicer-Off-Highway Products
Technical Service Bulletin USA 271E (listed on following page). Always use highest
viscosity lubricant, where overlapping grades exist, for the prevailing ambient
temperatures.
2. In severe applications where transmission and converter lubricant are at sustained
temperatures of 104° C or more, lubricant change intervals should be shortened from 1000
hours to 500 hours. Filter change interval would remain at 500 hours.
Oil Sampling and Drain Interval
1. Spicer-Off-Highway recommends that oil sampling be performed for axles and
transmissions in severe duty applications every 250 to 500 hours. Oil analysis should consist
of the following as a minimum:
• Spectrographic analysis
• Acid number
• Infrared analysis for carbon yield peak absorbance
• Physical inspection of sludge
• Viscosity check @ 100° C

Physical Property Replace Lubricant

Viscosity @ 100° C 20% increase or 20% decrease from new

Total acid number Increase of 2.0 from new.

NOTE: *Wear metal analysis can provide useful information but an axle or brake should not be
removed from service bases solely on this analysis.
Torque Converter/Transmission Fluid (USA 271E Rev 04/99)
Specification
1. Torque converter/transmission lubricant must be qualified by one of the following
specifications listed in order of preference.

Manufacturer Specification
Caterpillar TO-4

John Deere J20C, D

U.S. Military MIL-PRF-2104G

Allison C-4

Dexron II equivalent-see note below.

NOTE: Dexron is a registered trademark of General Motors Corporation.

NOTE: Dexron II equivalent is acceptable. However, it is not compatible with torque converters
or transmission equipped with graphitic friction material clutch plates.
CAUTION: Lubricants not recommended: Dexron III, engine oil, any GL-5 oils.
2. Oil Viscosity - It is recommended that the highest viscosity monograde lubricant available be
used for the anticipated ambient temperature. Typically this will be a CAT TO-4 qualified
lubricant. When large swings in ambient temperature are probable, J 20 C, D multigrades
are recommended. Multigrade lubricants should be applied at the lower viscosity rating for
the prevailing ambient temperature i.e. a 10W20 should be used where a 10W monograde is
used. If a C-4 multigrade is used in place of J20 lubricant, it is recommended that the
viscosity span no more than 10 points, i.e. 10W20.
CAUTION: Synthetic lubricants are approved if qualified by one of the above specifications. Oil
viscosity guidelines apply, but synthetic multigrades may span more than 10 points.

SM-066/01/02-A 8 of 12
Fluid and Lubricant Specifications

NOTE: For fire resistant fluids (FRF) please contact Spicer Off Highway Products.
3. Sump Pre-heaters - Pre-heat the transmission fluid to the minimum temperature for the oil
viscosity used before engine start up.
4. Normal Oil Change Interval - Drain and refill system every 1000 hours for average
environmental and duty cycle conditions. Severe or sustained high operating temperature or
very dusty atmospheric conditions will result in accelerated deterioration or contamination.
Judgement must be used to determine the required change intervals for extreme conditions.
5. Extended Oil Change Interval - Extended oil service life may result when using synthetic
fluids. Appropriate change intervals should be determined for each transmission by
measuring oil oxidation and wear metals, over time, to determine a baseline. Wear metal
analysis can provide useful information but a transmission should not be removed from
service based solely on this analysis.
6. Filters - Service oil filter element every 500 hours under normal environmental and duty
cycle conditions. Service the high performance extended life filter element every 1000
hours or upon warning indication from the filter back pressure sensor.
7. This recommended lubricant bulletin does not apply to transmission with electronic
modulation where separate approved oils are identified.
8. Any deviation from this recommendation must have written approval from the Application
Engineering Department of Spicer Off Highway Products.
CAUTION: Select highest oil viscosity compatible with the prevailing ambient temperature on the
oil application table shown below.

Powershift Transmission and Torque Converter Fluid Analysis

1. Spicer-Clark-Hurth Off Highway Components Division recommends that when chemical
sampling of a powershift transmission lubrication circuit fluid is being taken that several
samples be analyzed over period of time to establish its normal base. Large changes in
particle quantity from the normal level may indicate an abnormal condition within the
transmission or its lubrication fluid. Any conclusion made of the transmission's actual
condition, or action taken by the transmission user when interpreting the sample results, is
the full responsibility of the user.

Axle Oil
1. Spicer-Off-Highway recommends the use of 85W140 or 80W140 lubricants that meet the
requirements of API GL-5/MT1 or MIL-PRF-2105E for all severe applications. Where
ambient temperatures are commonly over 40° C, 140W is recommended.
2. In cases where vehicles must be cold-started in ambient temperatures below -15° C for
85W140 or 15° C for 140W, vehicle warm-up procedures must be followed before moving
vehicle or damage to the drive train components could occur.

Fire Resistant Fluid (FRF)

1. The machine hydraulic system (steer, brake and implement functions) may be modified to
accept fire resistant fluid. Use only a high quality water-in-oil (invert) emulsion which will
maintain a viscosity range of 80 to 4000 SUS. Fire resistant fluid must not be used in below
freezing ambient temperatures.
CAUTION: Machines designed for petroleum based hydraulic oil can only use fire resistant fluid
with certain modifications. Consult an authorized EJC representative if considering this
conversion.

! WARNING!

Never mix FRF types, or use with other fluid types, unless approved by the equipment
manufacturer. If the fluid type is not known, the operator must consult the maintenance
supervisor before topping off the tank.
