Fluid and Lubricant Specifications
Industry Specifications
1. The following lubricant chart lists components, types of lubricants, and specific
temperatures at which each lubricant may safely be used.
2. If the machine is operating in ambient temperatures not listed in the table below, see
component manufacturer’s manual for proper specifications.
3. For more information regarding the lubricants listed below, see description of each lubricant
in the following pages.
CAUTION: Use of lubricants which do not comply with listed requirements will cause rapid wear
and damage to machine parts.
NOTE: For electric-powered machines, see “Electric Powered Machines” in this document.

Fuel
1. The manufacturers of this engine only approve fuel which meets certain high standards. Use
of fuels that do not meet these standards will prevent the engine from reaching its designed
capacity. This means that the machine will be unable to provide the performance and
production needed.
2. The fuel approved comes under ASTM D975. Distillate fuels No.1-D and No.2-D
containing 0.3% or less sulphur are recommended for use on this engine.
3. The cloud point temperature of the fuel must be a minimum of 10° F (5.5° C) below
minimum ambient air temperature expected for seasonal conditions.
4. Use specification detailed in the table below to determine if current fuel supply is of the
correct standard.
Fuel Grade
Item 1D 2D
Flash point (minimum) 100° F (38° C) 125° F (52° C)

Engine Oil
1. Engine oil must be Heavy Duty Engine Oil meeting U.S. Military Specification MIL-L-
2104C.
2. For DDEC engines, European specification CCMC D4 or D5 is also acceptable.
3. For Deutz engines, European specification E1-E3/96+E4-98 is also acceptable.
4. For Caterpillar engines, Caterpillar specification TO-2 is also acceptable.
5. SAE Specification 15W-40 is suitable for ambient temperatures ranging from 5° F (-15° C)
to 95° F (35° C). For ambient temperatures outside this range, refer to table in “Industry
Specifications”, or engine manufacturer’s operating guide.
NOTE: For ambient temperatures below -4° F(-20° C), use SAE 5W-30 or SAE 5W-40 engine oil
to improve startability. These oils must conform to API CG-4.
NOTE: API is an abbreviation of American Petroleum Institute. SAE is an abbreviation of Society
of Automotive Engineers.

Antifreeze/Coolant
1. Unless otherwise indicated by the engine manufacturer, use an ethylene glycol base solution
in concentrate form for mixing with water in 50/50 proportions.
2. The anti-freeze must be chromate compatible and contain inhibitor additives which
minimize corrosion of copper, steel, solder, brass, cast iron and aluminum.
3. The antifreeze must meet ASTM D3306 coolant specification criteria in addition to the
following:
Item Specification
Maximum Ash Content 1.9% (ASTM D119)
NOTE: EJC 115LP equipped with Detroit Diesel engine uses coolant meeting industry standard
ASTM6210.
4. When mixed with water in 50/50 proportions, the solution will provide cooling system
protection to approximately -30° F (-24° C).

Important
1. EJC 61 and EJC 65 use hydraulic oil in hydrostatic transmission. See “Hydraulic Oil”.
2. The following guidelines from Spicer-Off-Highway Products Technical Service Bulletin
USA 287E Rev. 07/01 should be used in place of all other published lubricant guidelines for
transmissions, torque converters, and axles.
Torque Converter/Transmission Fluid (USA 287E Rev. 07/01)
Specification
1. Spicer - Off-Highway Products recommends the use of SAE 40 or SAE 50 lubricant that
meets CAT TO-4 requirements. In cases where vehicles must be cold-started in ambient
temperatures below 5° C, vehicle warm-up procedures must be followed before moving
vehicle or damage to the drive train components may occur.
CAUTION: Where ambient temperature variations do not allow the use of high viscosity lubricants
in transmissions, follow lubricant recommendations from Spicer-Off-Highway Products
Technical Service Bulletin USA 271E (listed on following page). Always use highest
viscosity lubricant, where overlapping grades exist, for the prevailing ambient
temperatures.
2. In severe applications where transmission and converter lubricant are at sustained
temperatures of 104° C or more, lubricant change intervals should be shortened from 1000
hours to 500 hours. Filter change interval would remain at 500 hours.
Oil Sampling and Drain Interval
1. Spicer-Off-Highway recommends that oil sampling be performed for axles and
transmissions in severe duty applications every 250 to 500 hours. Oil analysis should consist
of the following as a minimum:
• Spectrographic analysis
• Acid number
• Infrared analysis for carbon yield peak absorbance
• Physical inspection of sludge
• Viscosity check @ 100° C

NOTE: *Wear metal analysis can provide useful information but an axle or brake should not be
removed from service bases solely on this analysis.
Torque Converter/Transmission Fluid (USA 271E Rev 04/99)
Specification
1. Torque converter/transmission lubricant must be qualified by one of the following
specifications listed in order of preference.

Fluid and Lubricant Specifications
NOTE: For fire resistant fluids (FRF) please contact Spicer Off Highway Products.
3. Sump Pre-heaters - Pre-heat the transmission fluid to the minimum temperature for the oil
viscosity used before engine start up.
4. Normal Oil Change Interval - Drain and refill system every 1000 hours for average
environmental and duty cycle conditions. Severe or sustained high operating temperature or
very dusty atmospheric conditions will result in accelerated deterioration or contamination.
Judgement must be used to determine the required change intervals for extreme conditions.
5. Extended Oil Change Interval - Extended oil service life may result when using synthetic
fluids. Appropriate change intervals should be determined for each transmission by
measuring oil oxidation and wear metals, over time, to determine a baseline. Wear metal
analysis can provide useful information but a transmission should not be removed from
service based solely on this analysis.
6. Filters - Service oil filter element every 500 hours under normal environmental and duty
cycle conditions. Service the high performance extended life filter element every 1000
hours or upon warning indication from the filter back pressure sensor.
7. This recommended lubricant bulletin does not apply to transmission with electronic
modulation where separate approved oils are identified.
8. Any deviation from this recommendation must have written approval from the Application
Engineering Department of Spicer Off Highway Products.
CAUTION: Select highest oil viscosity compatible with the prevailing ambient temperature on the
oil application table shown below.

Axle Oil
1. Spicer-Off-Highway recommends the use of 85W140 or 80W140 lubricants that meet the
requirements of API GL-5/MT1 or MIL-PRF-2105E for all severe applications. Where
ambient temperatures are commonly over 40° C, 140W is recommended.
2. In cases where vehicles must be cold-started in ambient temperatures below -15° C for
85W140 or 15° C for 140W, vehicle warm-up procedures must be followed before moving
vehicle or damage to the drive train components could occur.
! WARNING!
Never mix FRF types, or use with other fluid types, unless approved by the equipment
manufacturer. If the fluid type is not known, the operator must consult the maintenance
supervisor before topping off the tank.

possible, obtain a copy of a manufacturer’s certified lab test report attesting to the contents,
quality and performance limits of the oils available.
5. Fluids must meet the following physical properties. All testing methods are based on ASTM
criteria.
