Grade 8 Assessment

What will you be graded on?

We will be covering all of the Criteria in this unit, A, B, C and D. During class time you will be
focusing on your performance grade (Criterion C) and thinking about what to write in your
journal. Criteria A, B and D will be covered mostly in your writing of the journal.

What is the PHE journal?

Is it a record of your engagement and performance in class for the unit. It should reflect a
development in knowledge and understanding via a process of reflection on your
performance and effort. The journal is divided into two parts that have separate
deadlines/hand-in dates on Managebac. You are in charge of your own journal and it should
reflect your development threw the unit.

What will we be covering in this unit?

 Shot Put
 Long Jump
 Ball Throw
 High Jump
 Long distance running
 Short distance sprinting

Interpersonal skills are going to be the main focus of this unit/school year and are part of
your journal writing and classroom development.

“Interpersonal skills are often

referred to as people skills,
social skills, or social
intelligence. They involve
reading the signals that others
send and interpreting them
accurately in order to form
effective responses. Individuals
show their interpersonal skills
all the time simply by
interacting with others.”

Journal entry 1:
1. Describe your current physical fitness and skill level. (150-300words)

General fitness/skill: I would say my overall fitness is great. As my

fastest 10 kilometer run is 52 minutes, which shows my stamina
and. Football plays a big part in my daily fitness, as I practice
everyday(otherthan when im injured). This has helped me
become fast and agile. I’m also able to jump high, which is useful
not only in football but also in other sports. My fitness level
allows me to stay running and playing sports for long periods
without feeling too tired, and I’ve worked on improving my
acceleration to be quicker in short distance.

Unit specific fitness/skill:

For this unit, the main focus is on running, and stamina, due to
long distance runs. Due to my experience with football, I have a
good base foundation in both speed and endurance. I’m already
comfortable running longer distances, meaning I can pace myself
well. In terms of sprints, I’m able to accelerate quickly and
maintain my speed over short distances. My jumping ability is
also high, and it contributes to my performance in events like
long jump or high jump. Overall, my fitness and skills are at a
good level for athletics, and I am looking forward to improving it.

Tips

 Your answer should describe each area and evaluate your

level.
 Try to use subject specific terminology/language.

2. What goals are you setting for yourself this unit? (150-300words)

Performance goals: in this unit, I’m setting two goals for myself.
The first is to beat my fastest time in the 80-meter sprint, which
is currently 10.88 seconds. I need to work on improving my speed
and acceleration, focusing on a stronger start and maintaining
my speed throughout the sprint to lower my time.

My second goal is to run a kilometre in exactly 3 minutes. This

will chelenge my endurance and ability to keep up a steady, fast
pace over a longer distance. I’ll need to balance speed and
stamina to reach this goal, ensuring I don’t burn out too early or
slow down towards the end.
By achiving these goals, I aim to be make a better verision than
myself in this unit
Interpersonal skills (See picture below):
In this unit, I want to massively improve my active listening skills. In athletics, paying
attention to instructions from the instructer is important for improving technique and
performance. Active listening also helps me understand feedback, which leads to better
progress. By focusing on what’s being said without distractions and asking questions when
needed, I will be able to apply advice more effectively. Improving\ this skill will help me
majorly in this unit

Tips
 Your goals should be directly related to the unit and be measurable.
 Each goal should be measurably, where you are now and where you
want to be at the end.

3. How you intend to reach those goals? (150-300words)

In class: In class, I will focus on both practicing along with

listening to my coach in order reach my goals. For the 80-meter
sprint, I will work on my start and maintaining my speed all the
way to the end. During class, I’ll also practice running a kilometre
by working on my pace steadily so I can finish in 3 minutes or
less. I will make attention to my coach’s advice to improve my
running form and fix any mistakes.

Outside of class: I will practive atleast 2 times a week(in class not

included). For the 80-meter sprint, I’ll focus on short runs and
explosive drills to improve my speed and acceleration. For the
kilometer run, I’ll do longer runs to work on maintaining a steady
pace. I’ll also make sure to use the advice I get in class, like
adjusting my running form, to improve how I train. Staying
seriose with my practice outside of class will help me get faster
and can help me reach my goals faster.

Tips

 To answer this question you are going to need to use the

answers from question 2.
 Your plan to reach your goals needs to have both sports and
interpersonal skills related answers.

Journal entry 2:

1. Identify with examples, strategies you used to improve any ONE or more of the
interpersonal skills form the picture below. (150-300words)
Answer: In this unit, my goals is to improve my active listening
skills in order enhance my speed and distance in jumping. I tried
to give my full attention during the PHE class sessions. For an
example, while getting feedback on how to sprint faster, I made
sure that I was fully paying attention. I also ask questions about
the the advice given to make sure that confirm my
understanding, such as when learning the proper technique for
the high jump. Additionally, I asked even more questions to gain a
better understanding, such as inquiring about the best pacing
strategies for long-distance running. This approach allowed me to
use the feedback into my practice, leading to improvements in
my performance. By actively listening and using the feedback, I
was able to improve my techniques and achieve better results in
class.

Tips
2. Describe the effectiveness of your plan? (150-300words)

Parts That Worked Well:

The plan I used was good in several ways. By keeping my focus on specific
goals such as improving my sprinting start and keeping a steady pace for
the kilometer run, I had noticed quite a lot progress. My sprint times had
become faster just by a bit, and I was able to maintain a steady and fast
pace in longer runs. Listening to the teacher using the feedback along
with carefully listning to instructions and asking questions, helped improve
my techniques and increase my performance. This method made sure I
understood and used the advice effectively.

Parts That Still Need Development:

However, some aspects of the plan require further improvement. Applying

the feedback during pernsal practice can prove to be difficult, this is due
to there being no teacher there to give feedback. For example,
maintaining proper jumping form during the long jump without supervision
from an expricenced instructor is difficult. Additionally, monitering myself
can improve how I train alone. To improve this aspect I can try and record
me running so that I can see what mistakes may be made, and so
improovment can also be done.
Parts that still need development:

Tips

 Look at the plan you wrote in Journal 1 to better answer the

question.
 Make sure you write about the plan and not your
performance (performance is covered in the next question)

3. Describe and summarize performance? (150-300words)

Areas I made progress in: I made progress in the 100 meter run
as I learned how to kepp my topspeed, and no matter how
fatigued I was. Also takig longer strides as instructed by the
teacher improved my time from 11.20 seconds to 10.88, and I
plan to improve my time even further.

Areas I still need development in: Despite these improvements,

there are areas that still need development. Specifically, my
endurance during longer sprints remains a challenge, not
comparing as I have one of the fastest in my class, but what I
would want persnaly. I need to work on maintaining my speed
over the distance without a drop in performance. Additionally, I
need to focus on getting a good start to build momentum more
effectively. To address these areas, I plan more targeted training
and start drills into my routine. By focusing on these aspects, I to
achieve even better and much faster times in all the runs and a
very long jump.

Tips

 Look at the anwers you wrote in Journal 1 to better answer

the question.
