Risk Identification

Lesson 2
Risk Identification
• The first step in the risk management process.
It involves determining which risks may affect
the project, organization, or any other area of
interest, and documenting their
characteristics.
• This step is critical as it lays the foundation for
the subsequent risk assessment, analysis, and
mitigation activities.
TYPES OF RISKS: SAFETY, SECURITY,
AND SANITATION
1. Safety Risks
• Safety risks involve potential threats to
physical health and well-being that can result
in injury or harm. These risks are commonly
found in workplaces, public spaces, and
homes.
Types of Safety Risks:
A. Physical Hazards:
Examples: Machinery accidents, falls from
heights, slips, and trips.
Mitigation: Safety guards, proper training, and
housekeeping practices.
Types of Safety Risks:
B. Chemical Hazards:
Examples: Exposure to toxic substances, spills,
and leaks.
Mitigation: Use of appropriate PPE, proper
storage and handling procedures,
and ventilation systems.

Types of Safety Risks:
C. Biological Hazards:
Examples: Exposure to pathogens, mold, or
viruses.
Mitigation: Hygiene practices, vaccination,
and proper waste management.
Types of Safety Risks:
D. Ergonomic Hazards:
Examples: Repetitive strain injuries, poor
posture, and inadequate workstation
design.
Mitigation: Ergonomic assessments, proper
workstation setup, and regular
breaks.
2. Security Risks
• Security risks are related to the protection of
assets, information, and individuals from
threats such as unauthorized access or
malicious activities.
Types of Security Risks:
A. Physical Security Risks:
Examples: Theft, vandalism, unauthorized
access to facilities.
Mitigation: Security systems, access controls,
and surveillance.

Types of Security Risks:
B. Cybersecurity Risks:
Examples: Hacking, malware, phishing attacks,
data breaches.
Mitigation: Firewalls, encryption, regular
updates, and user training.

Types of Security Risks:
C. Information Security Risks:
Examples: Data leaks, loss of confidential
information, insider threats.
Mitigation: Data protection policies, secure
access controls, and monitoring systems.
Types of Security Risks:
D. Operational Security Risks:
Examples: Disruptions due to procedural
lapses, fraud, or misuse of assets.
Mitigation: Strong internal controls, auditing,
and compliance checks.
3. Sanitation Risks
Sanitation risks involve threats to health and
safety resulting from poor hygiene and
cleanliness, often leading to contamination or
disease.
Types of Sanitation Risks:
A. Food Safety Risks:
Examples: Contamination by pathogens,
improper food handling, and cross-
contamination.
Mitigation: Adherence to food safety
standards, proper cooking and storage
practices, and regular inspections.

Types of Sanitation Risks:
B. Water Safety Risks:
Examples: Contaminated drinking water, poor
sanitation leading to waterborne diseases.
Mitigation: Proper water treatment and
purification, regular testing, and safe waste
disposal.
Types of Sanitation Risks:
C. Waste Management Risks:
Examples: Improper disposal of waste leading
to pollution or health hazards.
Mitigation: Effective waste management
systems, recycling, and proper waste disposal
practices.

Types of Sanitation Risks:
D. General Hygiene Risks:
Examples: Poor cleanliness in facilities leading
to the spread of germs and infections.
Mitigation: Regular cleaning schedules, use of
disinfectants, and maintaining hygiene
standards.
Addressing these risks involves implementing
comprehensive risk management strategies
tailored to each type of risk, ensuring the
safety, security, and sanitation of
environments and operations.
