History of Hiroshima
Hiroshima was founded in 1589 by a powerful feudal lord named mori terumoto. he chose a strategic location on
the ota River delta, which made it easy to defend and a good place for trade over time Hiroshima developed into
a bustling castle town with neighborhoods for specific trades like textiles and ceramics

During japan's edo period (1603-1868), Hiroshima became a prosperous center of agriculture, especially rice
production. In the late 1800s Japan’s meiji Restoration brought modernization, and hiroshima began to grow as
an industrial city. new railroads and a port were built connecting Hiroshima to other parts of japan industries like
shipbuilding steel, and textiles thrived making hiroshima a major urban center with a skilled workforce.

As Japan expanded its empire in the early 1900s Hiroshima took on a bigger military role. the city became a base
for the japanese army, with supply depots military hospitals, and army headquarters. it was a central point for
troops and resources especially during Japan’s campaigns in China and Southeast Asia.

By 1945, Hiroshima was a large important city with over 350,000 people. because it had not been heavily
bombed during World War II the united states saw it as a good location to test the atomic bomb's effects. its
military importance combined with its large civilian population, made it an ideal target

On August 6, 1945, the first atomic bomb was dropped on hiroshima. In seconds much of the city was destroyed,
and tens of thousands of people were killed instantly the bombing of Hiroshima and later nagasaki led to Japan’s
surrender marking the end of world war II and the beginning of the nuclear age.

Source B

“The hurt ones were quiet; no one wept, much less

screamed in pain; no one complained; none of the
many who died did so noisily; not even the children
cried; very few people even spoke.”

John Hershey - American journalist and author

An excerpt from the book Hiroshima, telling the stories

of 6 survivors, detailing their experiences before,
during, and after the bombing.

Activity 2: How does Source B’s description of the survivor’s reaction to the bombing offer a different
perspective than Source A? Consider how Hiroshima’s military role influenced its selection as a target and how
Hersey’s account highlights the human impact of this decision.
