n properties of matter to
1 identify substances
Most Essential Learning Competency:
Use properties of matter to identify substances and to separate them STEM_GC11MPIa-b-5

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, students must be able to:

1. Define matter
2. Identify the properties of matter
3. Differentiate physical and chemical properties of matter
4. Cite examples for physical and chemical properties of matter

What’s In
Direction: Complete the diagram about physical properties of matter and chemical properties of
matter.

What’s New
Directions: Identify whether each of the following change is a physical change or a chemical
change. Write “P” on the line before each number for a physical change and “C” for a
chemical change.
___1. Water boiling ___5. Burning paper

___2. Iron rusting ___6. Glass breaking

___3. Wood rotting ___7. Digestion of food

___4. Cutting paper ___8. Water freezing

What is It

PROPERTIES OF MATTER
Physical Chemical
 A physical property is an aspect  A chemical property may only be
of matter that can be observed observed by changing the
or measured without changing chemical identity of a substance.
its chemical composition.

Examples include: Examples include:

 Colour  Enthalpy of formation

 Shape  The heat of combustion
 Volume  Electronegativity
 Density  Coordination number
 Temperature  Solubility
 Boiling point  Acidity/basicity
 Viscosity  The degree of ionization
 Pressure  Oxidation
 Solubility  Chemical stability
 Electric charge  Flammability
 Malleability  Toxicity

TELLING PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES APART

Sometimes it can be tricky to know whether or not a chemical reaction has occurred. For
example, when you melt ice into water, you can write the process in terms of a chemical
reaction. However, the chemical formula on both sides of the reaction is the same. Since the
chemical identity of the matter in question is unchanged, this process represents a physical
change.
Page 2|3
Thus melting point is a physical property. On the other hand, flammability is a
chemical property of matter because the only way to know how readily a substance ignites is to
burn it. In the chemical reaction for combustion, the reactants and products are different.

LOOK FOR TELL-TALE SIGNS OF A CHEMICAL CHANGE

Usually, you don't have the chemical reaction for a process. You can look for tell-tale signs
of a chemical change. These include bubbling, colour change, temperature change, and
precipitation formation. If you see signs of a chemical reaction, the characteristic you are
measuring is most likely a chemical property. If these signs are absent, the characteristic is
probably a physical property.
