THE DIVINE SOURCE

THE ORIGINS OF LANGUAGE
WHAT IS THE CORE IDEA OF THIS THEORY?

The core idea of this theory is that language was a gift granted to
humans by a high power, such as god or gods. According to this theory,
human beings did not develop language by natural processes or
evolution, but instead, it was granted upon them by a supernatural force.

This concept is based on religious and mythical belief, the language is

considered as sacred and a gift from divine intervention. Human beings
can communicate with on another through language because it was
intentionally given to the human being by a divine being.
WHAT EVIDENCE OR HISTORICAL REASONING
SUPPORT THIS THEORY?

Many ancient traditions support such an idea-by citing the Bible's

account of God giving Adam the ability to name animals or the belief in
Hinduism that it was the goddess Sarasvati who provided humans with
language. Historically, some rulers tried to prove this theory by
experimenting on people. Around 2,500 years ago, Pharaoh
Psammetichus found two infants in the desert, hoping they would speak
the "original" language. When they allegedly said "bekos," a word of
Phrygian which meant bread, he concluded this was evidence that
Phrygian was the original language. A similar case emerged in the 1500s,
in which children who spoke Hebrew were found and King James IV of
Scotland believed it to be the language of the Garden of Eden;
ARE THERE ANY MODERN STUDIES OR RESEARCH
THAT BACK THIS THEORY?

No scientific research is available on this theory of origin for language

that is based on religious grounds and rejects the empirical evidence.
The modern approach of contemporary study rests on naturalistic and
evolutionary findings and explanations.
WHAT ARE THE WEAKNESSES OR CRITICISM OF
THIS THEORY?

Several critiques and weaknesses attack the Divine Source hypothesis.

For one, it presents no empirical evidence but depends mainly on
religious texts and myths, rather than scientific data or observable
phenomena. History has recorded experiments that Pharaoh
Psammetichus and King James IV came up with, which was supposedly
to prove the existence of a divine language but ended in inconclusive
and flawed data-most essentially, since children growing up in isolation
do not grow language spontaneously.
