Modal verb1
They are not tenses, but they show the mode (the way) of the verbs.
Form: Modal verb + verb1
I must study otherwise Zsike is going to kill me.
I could ride a bike when I was 10 years old.
1. Ability (Képesség)
Can (skills: something which you learn) present!!!!!
I can speak 4 languages. (I learnt them)
Could (past ability) In that certain point of the past, it matters.
I could speak French in the high school but now I cannot.
Be able to (You can put it into every tense), (we use it when the
situation is different from the general/extraordinary)
I had been able to speak English before I moved to the States.
I am not able to look at you right now. (we say that in case of anger,
sadness, shame) IT IS NOT THE SAME
I cannot look at you. (It means the person is blind)
×Used to (past habit, something which happened regularly in the past
but NOT ANYMORE, something was true in the past but not anymore)
I used to get up early. (I woke up early but now I wake up late)
NOT THE SAME
I am used to getting up early. (it became my habit so it is not difficult for
me anymore)
(Be+ used to+ gerund verb+ing)
I am used to your snoring.
Get used to it: Szokj hozzá
I used to snore.
I am used to his snoring.
I used to get angry easily.
I am/get used to him getting angry.
2. Probability/Possibility (how sure something is)- lehetőség
May/might ( low probability)
Will you come to the party? I might.
I might go on a vacation but I’m not really sure about it. (lehet hogy
elmegyek vakációzni)
Can/Could (higher probability, you give more alternatives or options)
Where is Marci? He can be at work or he can be at home.
It cannot be true.
Must (100% sure) BE (OR verb+ing) You must be kidding!
I’m expecting my friend to come over. Ohhh someone is knocking at the
door. It must be my friend.
My friend must be passing on the exam because he studied a lot.
(biztos hogy átmegy a vizsgán mert sokat tanult)
It must be true. (Tuti, hogy igaz)
3. Advice (it is not obligatory, there is possibility to choose)
Can (it is a very light advice, the problem or the situation is not serious
or severe)
I have a headache. – You can either take a pill or wash your face.
Should, ought to (strong advice- suggestion, expectation)
I have had a headache for a month. – You should see a doctor.
You should study more.
Had better ( it is almost a threat, you do not need to mention the
negative outcome)
You had better come home on time. (you can feel the negative outcome
if you won’t go home on time)
You’d better give my money back.
4. Necessity
Need to (physical and mental necessities, essential for life)
I need to go to the restroom. I need to sleep. I need to eat.
Negative: needn’t/ don’t need to, doesn’t need to
Must (internal necessity, it was your decision)
I must leave now because it is getting dark.
I must buy a gift for my father.
Negative: mustn’t (prohibited, not allowed, forbidden) (Tilos vagy nem
szabad)
You must not smoke here. It is not a smoking area.
You must not miss that chance.
Must is only used in the PRESENT.
Have to (obligatory/mandatory, external, it was NOT your decision,
rules, law)
I have to leave because my train is leaving soon.
You have to stop at the traffic light if it is red.
Negative: don’t have to, doesn’t have to ( it is not necessary)
Past: had to (negative: didn’t have to)
Future: will have to (negative: won’t have to)
Present Perfect: have, has had to (haven’t had to)
I have had to leave recently.
Future Perfect: will have had to
I will have had to do it by tomorrow.
Past Perfect: had had to
I had had to get to the station by the time the train left.
