HSP3U1 Research & Inquiry Name: _________________________

Psychology Experiment
In order to study and draw conclusions about human behaviour, social scientists conduct
carefully designed experiments. For this assignment, you will similarly conduct a short study to
answer a specific research question by designing and running an experiment.
You will present your findings in a research report. Your report should include the following
headings:

INTRODUCTION /5 marks

 Include an appropriate title

 Begin by introducing your topic and establishing its significance
 State your research question
 Next, include a brief literature review where you summarize what other studies
have already revealed about your topic
 Include at least THREE reliable sources, TWO of which must peer-
reviewed
 These sources should include different opinions on your topic from
experts in the field of psychology
 Cite your sources using APA in-text citations
 Finally, state your own hypothesis

METHOD /5 marks

Describe the design of your experiment by identifying the following:

 The type of research (longitudinal or cross-sectional)
 The type of sample (convenience, clustered or random sample)
 The sample size (number of participants try to have at least 5 subjects in both
your control and experimental groups)
 The environment/conditions of the control group versus the experimental
group
 The specific tasks that each participant was required to complete
 How you as the experimenter measured the outcome  test, time,
 How the APA’s ethical standards were met (evidence of informed consent,
mitigation of harm, confidentiality and debrief)
RESULTS /10 marks

 Organize your data: convert numbers into percentages or put data into charts or
graphs.
 Provide an interpretation of each graph and/or statistic and explain your findings
by connecting to course concepts
 Try to have at least THREE findings

DISCUSSION /5 marks

 Provide a critical analysis of your findings:

o Were there any confounding variables?
o How could the experimental design have been improved?

CONCLUSION /5 marks

 Do the findings of your study support the hypothesis? To what extent?

 Finally, how can your findings be applied to the real world?

REFERENCES /5 marks
 Include both in-text citations and a final works cited list at the end of the report.
 Use APA formatting throughout.
 Sources should be reliable and scholarly

COMMUNICATION /5 marks
 Ideas are clearly and concisely conveyed.
 The report is well-structured and clearly organized using the above headings.
 Language is formal and precise.
 Effective use of course concepts throughout.
 Graphs, charts, and/or quotations are effectively integrated.
 Free of spelling and grammatical errors.

TOTAL MARKS: 40
LENGTH: 1000-1500 words (4-6 pages, double-spaced)
DUE: FRIDAY, March 10th to Brightspace
Sample Topics:

In formulating your research question and hypothesis, you may want to consider the relationship between
any of the following:

Dependent Variable Independent Variable

 Mood  Type of food consumed
 Attention  Types of images viewed
 Empathy  Type of music /sounds heard
 Fear  Amount of exercise/physical activity
 Creativity  Amount of praise or criticism
 Endurance  Impact of different colours
 Alertness  Impact of being in a group vs alone
 Confidence  Amount of sleep
 Memory  Other
 Learning
 Other

For example:

Research question:
Is mood impacted by the type of food consumed?

General Tips:

1. Have the same number of subjects in your control and experimental groups.
2. Ensure that the conditions are exactly the same for both the control and experimental groups
except for the independent variable. For example: Two groups receive exactly ½ cups of a
beverage. One group receives a caffeinated beverage; the other receives a decaffeinated beverage.
Both groups wait 15 minutes and then are timed as they run one lap of the track.
3. Unless you are testing the placebo effect, try to control for it.
4. Don’t reveal your hypothesis to the participants until the end of your experiment.
Informed Consent Form

Study name:
Include the study name. For example, “An investigation into the impact colour on word recall.”

Researcher:
State your name and the course for which you are collecting the data.

Purpose of the research:

Include a statement about the purpose of the research. Include a statement indicating how the
research will be conducted, presented and reported.

What your will be asked to do in the research:

Include a statement regarding the role and/or responsibilities of the research participants. Include
a statement regarding the estimated time commitment of the participation.

Risks and discomforts:

Include a statement regarding any real or perceived risks or potential discomfort that may result
from participation in the research. If there is a possibility of harm or discomfort it must be
described and the mitigation methods must be indicated.

Voluntary participation:
Include the following text: “Your participation in the research is completely voluntary and you
may choose to stop participating at any time.”

Confidentiality:
Indicate how the data collected (test responses, video, images) will be used.
Include the following text: “Confidentiality will be provided to the fullest extent possible.”

Questions about the research:

Indicate that if a research participant has questions about the research in general or their role in
the study that they should contact the research or their supervisor (teacher).
Include the following text: “This research has been reviewed and approved by a teacher in the
Social Science and History Department of North Toronto Collegiate Institute.
