 Problem 1 (2.5 pts) : Given the following matrices

 1 1 1 
   1 0 1 
A   3 1 m  and B   
 2 m 2  2 1 1 
 
a. Find m such that A is singular.
b. For m  1 ,
i. find the matrix A 1
ii. find the matrix X such that X.AT  B

 Problem 2 (2.0 pts) : A manufacturer produces three products A, B, and C. The profits for each
unit of A, B, and C sold are $2, $3, and $6, respectively. Fixed costs are $15000 per year, and the
costs of producing each unit of A, B, and C are $3, $6, and $8, respectively. Next year, a total of
12000 units of all three products is to be produced and sold, and a total profit of $48000 is to be
realized. If the total cost is to be $88000, how many units of each of the products should be
produced next year ?

 Problem 3 (1.5 pts) : The demand function for a good is given by Q  1200  2P while the total
cost is given by C  Q 2  200Q  10000 .
a. Find the marginal of the profit function with respect to Q at P  550 and explain its
economic meaning.
b. Find the elasticity of the cost function with respect to Q at P  550 and explain its economic
meaning.

 Problem 4 (2.5 pts) : Suppose you are running a factory, producing some sort of widget that
requires steel as a raw material. Your costs are predominantly human labor, which $20 per hour for
your workers, and the steel itself, which runs for $100 per ton. Suppose your revenue R is modeled
by the following equation
R( x, y)  45x2/3 y1/3
where x represents hours of labor, and y represents tons of steel.
a. Find the marginal revenue product function with respect to x and its value when x  8 ,
y  125 . Explain the economic meaning of this value.
b. If your budget is $36000, what is the maximum possible profit ?

 Problem 5 (1.5 pts) : Solve the differential equation

y  2y  16xe 2 x
with the initial condition y(0)  2
