NATIONAL FAMILY HEALTH SURVEY & INSTITUTIONS INVOLVED


NFHS is a large-scale, multi-round survey conducted in a
representative sample of households throughout India.
The NFHS is a collaborative project of the:
International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai
ICF, Calverton, Maryland, USA
the East-West Center, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), GoI:
Designated IIPS as the nodal agency
Responsible for coordination and technical guidance for
NFHS.
Funded by USAID
Supplementary support from UNICEF
IIPS collaborated with a number of Field Organizations (FO) for
survey implementation.
Technical assistance provided by ICF and the East-West Center.

INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF POPULATION SCIENCE (IIPS),


MUMBAI
Formerly known as the Demographic Training and Research
Centre (DTRC) till 1970
Established in July 1956 under the joint sponsorship of Sir
Dorabji Tata Trust, GoI and the United Nations.
Re-designated as IIPS in 1985 to facilitate the expansion of its
academic activities
Declared as 'Deemed University’ in 1985, under Section 3 of the
UGC Act, 1956
It serves as a regional center for Training and Research in
Population Studies for the ESCAP region.
It has unique position amongst all regional population centres:
It was the first such centre started
Serves much larger population than any other regional
centres.
Under administrative control of the Ministry of Health and
Family Welfare
Hub of a population and health-related teaching and research
Plays vital role for planning and development
Provides consultancy to the Government, NGOs and other
academic institutions.

KEY FINDINGS
SEX RATIO
Sex ratio of the total population (females per 1,000 males): 1,020 (NFHS-5); 991
(NFHS-4): Women outnumber men in India for the first time
Sex Ratio for urban areas: 985; Sex Ratio in rural areas: 1,037
Sex ratio at birth for children born in the last five years (females per 1,000
males): 929 (NFHS-5); 919 (NFHS-4)
Major States with low SRBs are spread all over the country: Uttar Pradesh,
Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Bihar, Delhi, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil
Nadu, Odisha, Maharashtra.
Many States have seen an improvement in their SRBs, some have also
witnessed a worsening, e.g. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Odisha.
FERTILITY RATE
Total Fertility Rates (TFR): Declined from 2.2 (NHFS-4) to 2.0 (NHFS-5) at the
national level
It has reached below the replacement rate of 2.1
This is true across all States of India.
Total Fertility rate in Urban areas: 1.6
Total Fertility rate in Rural areas: 2.1
MATERNAL & CHILD HEALTH
Infant mortality rate (IMR): 35.2 (NFHS-5); 40.7 (NFHS-4)
Institutional births (%): 88.6 (NHFS-5); 78.9 (NHFS-4)
IMR – Infant Mortality Rate has declined marginally across states
This can be attributed to the increased institutional births.
Exclusive breastfeeding to children under age 6 months has shown an
improvement in all-India level
From 55 percent in 2015-16 to 64% in 2019-21
FAMILYPLANNINGMETHODS
Female sterilization (%): 37.9 (NFHS-5); 36.0 (NFHS-4)
Male sterilization (%): 0.3 (NFHS-5); 0.3 (NFHS-4)
Pill (%): 5.1 (NFHS-5); 4.1 (NFHS-4)
Condom (%): 9.5 (NFHS-5); 5.6 (NFHS-4)
MALNUTRITION
The three indicators of malnutrition - stunting, wasting and underweight
showed an overall improvement.
Stunting (low height-for-age): Declined from 38 to 36 %
Wasting (low weight-for-height): Declined from 21 to 19%
Underweight (low weight-for-age): Declined from 36 to 32 %
ANAEMIA
A key health indicator that has worsened is the incidence of anaemia in
under-5 children (from 58.6 to 67%), women (53.1 to 57%) and men (22.7 to
25%)
20%-40% incidence is considered moderate.
Indian States show variation: from 39.4% in Kerala to 79.7% in Gujarat
Barring Kerala, all States are in the “severe” category.
