BIG DATA | NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING
Machine Learning, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing are
the key drivers of Digital Transformation. The Programme on Data Science & Artificial
Intelligence from IIM Bangalore is aimed at professionals who seek a flexible approach
towards developing their hands-on skills and competencies in these disciplines.

Motivation
The DSAI Program addresses the foundational disciplines
of data science, namely, Statistics, Machine Learning, Big
Data, Artificial Intelligence, and Natural Language Processing.
Managers who lead data science teams are required to
possess a sound understanding of the underlying technologies.
More importantly, they must also be able to communicate the
strategic benefits of their efforts to stakeholders. The field of
information systems provides the appropriate frameworks to
build the business case for data science initiatives, and to
analyse the shifts brought about by its application.

Organizations that fail to exploit the multi-faceted power of

data science will be rapidly left behind. While there is a threat
of job loss in mechanistic settings like BPO operations, there
is also a tremendous potential to innovate in environments that
are conducive to analytics. For example, insurance firms have
begun to offer discounts to policy holders who are willing to
share data recorded by their wearable devices. The collection
and processing of this unstructured data is fairly complex, and
yields tangible returns to business.

Programme in DS & AI Programme in DS & AI

The Programme in Data Science & Artificial Intelligence is an executive education offering from IIM Bangalore
The programme empowers managers and other professionals to draw from the frameworks of data science and
information systems, and guide their organizations along a forward-looking trajectory.

Faculty from IIM Bangalore with decades of expertise in data science and information systems shall be the chief
contributors to the programme. The pedagogy employs a mix of lectures, management case studies and handson
technology explorations. A host of top-notch professionals, many of whom are eminent IIMB alumni, will be
sharing their experiences with real life data science applications and decisions. These professionals are drawn
from a range of sectors including healthcare, IT services, and the government.

Participants who seek the comprehensive Programme on DS & AI certification will work on a real-life problem over
4 months, preferably drawn from their workplace setting. We will identify mentors from the respective industry
sector, and a guide from IIMB’s faculty. The big data cluster may be used to carry out the computations.

Eligibility Criteria
Participants should have a Bachelor’s degree in engineering/science/commerce/arts, with
mathematics as one of the core subjects. At least 3 years of work experience is preferred.
Given that programming is critical to developing a working understanding of data science,
we prefer participants with strong coding skills, who are willing to embrace a variety of
languages and technology platforms. Participants must dedicate serious time to assignments
that will be graded. Periodic assessments shall be made via online exams.

Who should attend?

This certificate series in data science exposes the participants to a large set of frameworks
and technologies, and prepare them for data-intensive roles in retail, healthcare, marketing,
supply chain management, finance, insurance and other industry sectors. The modules
in the DSAI series are suitable for managers who wish to develop a programming-oriented
appreciation for their individual domains. Projects drawn from their own workplace settings will
help them with the assimilation of the topics.

Selection Process
After the completed applications are received by the EEP Office, a shortlist will be drawn up.
Subsequently, the programme office will reach out to the candidates, to ascertain their
readiness as well as fit for the programme. Any doubts may be clarified during this call.
Module progression
Make no mistake, this is an intensive programme, with quality gates at each stage.

It is designed to strengthen the participant’s foundations in statistics, linear algebra and programming. We begin
by bringing DSAI participants up to speed on Python programming with the help of extensive tutorials. Next,
IIMB’s MOOC division will help the participant cover the required sections of its courses dedicated to descriptive
statistics (SFB-1 & SFB-2). Live sessions on the same material shall be conducted at a rapid pace. We end the
module with a few more sessions on inferential statistics and linear algebra.

Making optimal use of weekends, these modules will follow a (2 + 5) session format on Friday and Saturday Again,
each module will have an online assessment at the end.

Any supporting textbooks will be mailed to the participant in advance. The Institute’s Learning Management
System (LMS) shall be hosting cases and any additional material.

Technology requirements
Given the online orientation, participants must be equipped with the requisite level of Internet connectivity, on
a 3 GB daily plan. You will be required to turn your video on! Computers must be recent and powerful, and
capable of processing large volumes of data. We recommend laptop models with 8 GB RAM and at least 50
GB of free storage. From time to time, we will suggest installing software packages, most of which are free and
open source. We strongly recommend using personal laptops that meet the specifications, without having to
worry about restrictions on office issued laptops.
Award of Certificate
A part time certificate of completion will be awarded by IIMB to the participants within 90 days from the last day
of the programme upon meeting the programme requirements and its successful completion.

Alumni
Successful completion of the programme also entitles participants to be admitted to IIMB Bangalore Executive
Education Alumni Association.

Why IIMB
IIMB has been a prime mover in technology-enabled learning. In 2005, it launched the PGSEM programme in
Chennai on the Infosys campus, aided by satellite technologies. Fast forward to 2015, we made a major foray into
MOOCs and now host over 40 courses on the global edX platform. In the current Covid-19 pandemic, the Institute
has successfully transitioned all of its programmes into a purely digital mode. Our faculty have mastered the art of
interacting with students who are spread all across the country.

With a faculty body chosen from among the best universities worldwide, IIMB has emerged as a leader in the
areas of management research, education and consulting. The Institute’s proximity to some of the country’s
leading institutions gives the advantage of integrating classroom knowledge with professional experience. With
world-class expertise built over decades, the faculty can expertly engage with executive audiences in face-to face
and distributed settings.
