Learning Update
School Message
This is the midterm learning update for first semester courses, with the final marks coming out in early February.
The Ministry of Education made some changes last year, what is new: Grade 9 classes/courses use the 4 point
proficiency scale (Emerging, Developing, Proficient, Extending) and percentage for students taking grade 10, 11,
and/or 12 classes. Full Year courses will only have a comment on this Learning Update, their first formal mark
(Mid-term) will appear on the semester end Learning Update, early February. Students completed a self
assessment and are to share with their parents.

Term 1 Comments: Jesus has demonstrated good measuring skills. He consistently comes prepared for cooking
labs. He can work efficiently in the kitchen, but sometimes needs frequent reminders to stay on task and complete
his fair share of responsibilities. His assignments are usually completed, but do not extend beyond meeting
criteria. He could make better use of class time and FLEX to improve his assignments.

Term 1 Comments: This term, our class explored a variety of texts and literary genres, examining the impact of
different literary techniques and text features. We broadened our perspectives by making connections between
the texts and our own lives. Additionally, we have been developing our writing skills through journaling, creative
compositions, and formal literary responses. Moving forward, we will focus on writing for a formal audience,
expanding our academic vocabulary, and supporting our opinions with examples from the texts. We will also dive
into a novel and poetry in the coming weeks.
I enjoy teaching Jesus. He is a hardworking student who demonstrates a good knowledge of the concepts
covered this term. Jesus is a proficient reader, as he can discuss texts on an interpretive level and apply a range of
reading strategies to interpret increasingly complex texts. His creative writing is engaging; he adds interesting
details to engage his readers. Jesus is also an important member of our class community, adding relevant and
insightful contributions to our class discussions. To stretch, Jesus can further develop his formal writing skills by
using precise academic vocabulary in his formal responses and by learning to incorporate textual evidence to
support his claims. Moving forward, I encourage Jesus to continue to attend Flex to refine and edit his written
work. Keep up the strong effort Jesus!
Term 1 Comments: Jesus has demonstrated impressive progress in Spanish this semester. His prior knowledge of
the language has enriched his learning, allowing him to share insights with the class and naturally take on a
leadership role that his peers recognize and value. By contributing in this way, he has also strengthened essential
skills, particularly in reading and writing, as he explores books of personal interest and engages in projects that
foster his growth. Moving forward, his goals are to continue refining his reading and writing abilities while actively
participating to support the class. A key focus for him will be enhancing his reading comprehension, particularly
by analyzing more complex texts and exploring the deeper meaning behind the vocabulary and context. This will
support his ability to engage with advanced material and strengthen his overall fluency in the language.

Term 1 Comments: So far students have been using Social Studies inquiry processes and skills to ask questions;
gather, interpret, and analyze ideas; and communicate findings and decisions.
In addition, they can assess the significance of people, places, events, or developments, and compare varying
perspectives on their historical significance at particular times and places, and from group to group.
So far students have learned about: Geography of Canada, History of British Columbia, British Columbia's
Resources and Economy, New France, and the Fur Trade.
Your child is a kind and friendly student. I always enjoy practicing my Spanish with Jesus! He also participates well
in class discussions. Generally his homework completion is good. At times, he needs to put a more consistent
effort into his work.
Your child does need to work on his punctuality. I have given him too many reminders about showing up to class
on time. In addition, my Peer Tutor, and I do need to remind him to not speak when the instructors are speaking.
Jesus can also continue to build his studying skills. He is stronger in written responses and needs work on multiple
choice questions.
Next term, I want your child to participate more in class discussions, be ready to learn at the beginning of class,
and complete homework assignments thoroughly.
