yarn is now being spun in its Yorkshire home

ou don’t have to delve far into this
country’s history to appreciate its
heritage in textiles. From Yorkshire’s
woollen mills to Lancashire’s cotton mills, to
the lacemakers of Nottingham, endless fibre
has passed through our ancestors’ hands.
My own forebears were silk ribbon weavers
in Coventry.
Yet there’s a sizeable chance that the yarn
on your needles right now originated
elsewhere, especially if it’s acrylic. Modern
acrylics – the high-quality ones, at least –
have earned their place in the discerning
knitter’s stash but you’d be hard-pressed to
find any that are UK-made. Until now.

SECRETS AND SUSTAINABILITY


Reader, I have exciting news. One of the very
best acrylic yarns is coming home. From now
on, Stylecraft’s iconic Special yarns will be
produced at its mill in Slaithwaite, West
Yorkshire. And to celebrate this momentous
event, a further twenty shades are being
added to the existing hundred-strong
DK-weight range. Did I mention exciting? Yes.
Yes, I think I did.
Vast amounts of secret work went into the
plan. The mill already produces natural fibres
for Stylecraft’s parent company Spectrum
Yarns, but to make one of the world’s
favourite acrylics on-site required rafts of
